CLEAR UP THIS MATTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT LEGAL ACTION DOES NOT HAVE TO BE TAKEN. Thank you. A Lath House for the,. North-Temp te Climate DR J. H VANDERMEULEN~ LATH are a common 0 e, warm- HOUSES OR shade houses feature of southern er) climates, as in Texas, Florida, California, and points farther south They allow the culture of orchids under the near-~deal condmons of circulating fresh air, free rainfall, and natural hght Frequently, m fact, they take the place of lhe more northern greenhouse, provid mga spot where light and the elements can be controlled to some degree Such lath houses may vary from a simple roofed-over veranda or lana~ to a true shade house erected out ~n thc garden, roofed over with either shade cloth, lath, or even corrugated fiberglass panels Sobd roofs for south- ern ll~th houses are a common feature in those areas with excessive rainfall or w~th strong winds during certain t~mes of the year However, the farther north you travel, the chmate becomes less and less amena- ble to outdoor orchid culture -- mainly because of the decrease in average tempera- ture Accordingly, orchid collectmns spend longer periods of the year indoors, e~ther ~n greenhouses or in mdoor setups fitted with various art~ficial hghts, and corre- spondingly less tame per year outdoors Nevertheless, the plants always benefit from even a brief sum outside Indeed, many growers ~n Canada and other north- temperate areas moxe part or all of their collections outdoors dunng the warm months for "summering ' Depending on ho`* far north you bx e and what the local chmane cond~uons are, this "summering" may mean two to four months of the summertime spent outside -- most often June through September Some particularly hardy varieties, such as cymbidiums, ma5' v, ell go outside tn early May for a five-month outdoor period In fact, one gro`*er in Winnipeg, Mamtoba, moves her cymb~&ums outside in late April, well before the local newspapers have declared the ad~ ent of summer But the cymbldiums sur~ve beautifully with the help ora couple ofotd sheets as covering dunng the cooler mghtume hours In Nova Scotia, the climate is suffczently mild (simdar ~n its summer to that of Mmne or England) that the hardier plants can go outdoors in May, with the occasional help of a nighttime blanket Hov, ever, the bulk of the collections m this eastern Canadian marmme province generally can stand a June through September summering, enjoying a truly lovely mild summer with warm days and pleasantly milder nighttime temperatures and fairly frequent rainfall Most of the plants come back in during late September, leaving the cymb~dmms out into the month of October to get the last of the season's rays Even that can be stretched into Nox em- ber w~th thc nighttime blanket of some old sheets or other cover The benefit to the plants ts truly remarkable, with real spurts ofnew growth and increased rooting and with that green gloss on the leaves that indicates good health and wtahty OUTDOOR OPTIONS The facflmcs for this outdoor summcnng actually can be very simple In my own case, my p/ants summered for several years on a large old barn door supported above the ground on some concrete blocks The whole thing was located in thc shade under some trees and, in fact, was quite sufficient for my purposes Thc ~Maplebrook House, Enficld, .Nova ~icotla, Canada BO", IN0 Shaded from the sun by surround- mg conifers, the author's open wood- en lath house m the Canadmn man- time province of Nova Scotia f~atuF¢$ between the benches The practleal- Ihe plants to their protected wmter home at the onset of cold weather The wide access area allows the v, heelbarro'~ used for the task to be drawbacks, however, were several I was unable, except with dlffCuIty, to reach thf ones set in the middle ofthe platform Also, it ,*as hard to groom and inspect tht plants tn those few minutes of spare time that all too often are all that you haw axafiable between other domestic requests, such as dnwng kids to baseball practice to music lessons, or that most vexing interruption of all -- your job One solutmn ~s to construct a low summering bench, posmoncd under some tree, and at the right hmght for easy access Mrs Irene Kothuber of the Vancouve~ Orchid Society solved this problem for her cymbldiums by placing them on ~ spccmlly built, step-hke bench out in what is known by cymes as the "full Vancou vet sun ' The idea is not unique and may well be one of those all-pervasive :dca because we saw a s:mllar bench at an orchid~st's home in Coral Gables, Florida during the l lth World Orchid Conference The ultimate in outdoor summenng, of course, is thc full-blown lath house, brai tq take all your plants, making them readily accesstble to all grooming, picking sorting, and aggregating, and providing that welcome private refuge to which ym can retire when the pressures become too great ~ndoors What are the advantages of a lath house over smaller or less ambitious projects Mainly size and ease of handling and manag;ng your plants Clearly, everythln: that you can do in a lath house you also can do on an old barn door or on m discarded budge table set ~n thc shade ofthc house But the difference ~s space Also the permanence ora properly located and ready-for-occupation shade house is vet handy when the mood strikes you in the spring to start moving selected plant outdoors for thc summer Thus, hunting through the storage rooms or in the back c the garage for that old table that was used last year becomes unnecessary The lat house ~s ready for ~mmedmte occupation CHOOSING THE SITE For most growers, where to place the lath house is probably the easiest deos~on ~ thc whole project Most of us ~nhabit hm~tcd space on this globe, and often th available space ~s whatever ~s lift on the property after thc garage, dnveww geranium bed, and summer herb garden have bccn laid out 25 OUNDATIO,U
