Instructions
A. This application must be filled in typewriter OR ink, and submitted I~ to the Building Inspec-
tor with the following; for new buildings or new use:
1. Final survey of property with accurate location of all buildings, propertv lines, streets, and unusual
natural or topographic features.
2. Final approval of Health Dept. of water supply and sewerage disposal-(S-9 form or equal).
3. Approval of electrical installation from Board of Fire Underwriters.
4. Commercial buildings, Industrial buildings, Multiple Residences and similar buildings and installa-
tions, a certificate of Code compliance from the Architect or Engineer responsible for the building.
5. Submit Planning Board approval of completed site plan requirements where applicable.
B. For existing buildings (prior to April 1957), Non-conforming uses, or buildings and "pre-existing"
land uses:
1. Accurate survey of p~operty showing all property lines, streets, buildings and unusual natural or
topographic features.
2.Sworn statement of owner or previous owner as to use, occupancy and condition of buildings.

Dear Mr. Lessard:
About a year ago I spoke with you in your office about
a barn that was being renovated on the north side of Main Road
in Orient, about .8 of a mile east of Village Lane, on land
owned by John Tuthill of Orient. The barn is next door to a
house (#26875) lived in by Mr. Michael Korell and myself and
owned by Mr. Korell. I enquired if your office had issued a
building permit for the work going on next to our house, and
I sought your reassurance that the property next to us could
not be used for any commercial purpose, because, at the time,
Mr. Korell and I heard that the barn was being renovated for
use by Mr. Bobby Sorenson, a developer and builder in Orient,
whose address is Orchard St., Orient, N.Y., {tel.: 323-3552).
You told me that no building permit had been issued for
the renovation of the Tuthill barn, and you positively assured
me that the property in question was zoned for residential or
agricultural use only and not for commercial use. You said
that you would look into this matter. I felt greatly relieved.
Now, the exterior of the barn is rebuilt, and the property
next door to our house is clearly being used by Mr. Sorensen
as a storage site for lumber and other building supplies
needed on building projects elsewhere. There are stacks of
lumber on the lot, giving the place the appearance of a lumber
yard. And we have witnessed Mr. Sorenson's trucks being driven
onto the premises, lumber being loaded onto the trucks, and
the trucks being driven away. (Frequently, the drivers have
trespassed on our driveway.) On Saturday, Feb. 27th, in the
morning, Mr. Korell and I stopped one of Mr. Sorenson's
drivers (who was using our driveway) and asked what he was
doing on our property. He said that he was picking up bags
of nails for Mr. Sorenson, whom he was going to meet in five
minutes.
Clearly, what is going on next door to our house is in
violation of the zoning laws of Southold. Several years ago
we noted that your office shut down a skin and nail-care
business that was operating out of a house on Main Road just
west of our property because such commercial use of the property
was in direct violation of zoning restrictions. We ask that
you stop the commercial use by Mr. Sorenson and Mr. Tuthill
of the property next to our house for the same reason.
The commercialization of the property adjacent to our
lot devalues our property by perhaps 50%. So, as you can see,
we face the threat of real financial loss if Mr. Sorenson
is not stopped now. We ask that you enforce the law to protect
our rights and the rights of all home owners in Orient and
Southold who want to preserve their homes and protect their
environment from such illegal encroachment.
