LLoyd Terry Labor Camp.. Orient
Report of Chairman
To
Board of Appeals
Town of Southold N.Y.
The above application is occasioned by an expansion
of Lloyd Terry's present labor camp. The details of this
expansion have been approved by the Board of Health. The reason
this expansion comes to our board is solely because of the fect
that Mr Terry, since establishing his camp some years ago close
to his then place of residence h8s since shifted his residence
to a location about 13. mile from his main operation. Thus the
present labor C8mp is located closer to his mother's residence,
his former residence, than to his present home.
The expe_nsion of present labor camps on farms is occasioned
by cessasion of the operetions of the Eastern Suffolk Cooperative
in Greenport, formerly a large supplier of labor in the area.
As stated before,we know of no way to assist in this situation
other than to permi t ~li th proper time limitations the expansion
of existing camps. The Ipbor Cooperative in Greenport hes housed
up to 250 Puerto Ricans a_t various times in the past. It Ws.s
certainly not the intention of those concerned with ~m~Bg Zonin~
to reject the legit~mate needs of the community.
I believe r~ Terry's application to be reasonable and
necessary ,however,i t appears to me advisable to grp.nt permits
for this type of expansion of a non conforming operation on an
s.nnuel ba.sis,r~ther than projecting such a use into the indefinite
future.

Dear Sir;
The Board of apneals discussed your labor camp problem and
labor camps in ~eneral at t~eir meeting today.
They feel that your residence is further from the cam~han
others, so that you should file for the expansion of an non-confdfming
labor camp under provisions of Article X section l003a of the ordinance
If you will complete the enclosed forms with your reasoning
for the necessary expansion, have your signature notarized and get them
back to the Board by Thursday evening they will put it on the agenda
for the first meeting in July. The fee to accompany the application
will be :it 5".00
Yours truly
