REASON FOR APPEAL

,1. STRICT APPLICATION OF THE ORDINANCE would produce practical difficulties or unneces-
. .
sary HARDSHIP because I wish to build with my own hands a building on
the highest and least accessible peak on the property. I have previously
built a platform on this peak, which I use for a lookout. The platform
is 12 ft. by 16 ft. and will become the floor for a: cabin. I can and
have built a road running northward from the 50 ft. right-of-way which
connects with Ruth Rd. to a point less than 100 ft. from my new
structure if the property were level. The last 100 ft., however, are
practically straight up, and it would be impossible to build a road
by the shortest distance. A longer, winding road could probably be
built, but its cOst would be more than ten times that of the structure
which I propose to build. I will build a 15 ft. road which will get
cars close to the structure.
2. The hardship created is UNIQUE and is nat shared by all properties alike in the immediate
vicinity of this property and in this use district because
1. No one else's property has such a steep hill.
2. No one else wants to build a little hideaway with his own hands.
3. No one else has 500,000 people he wants to hide from.
3. The Variance would observe the spirit of the Ordinance and WOULD NOT CHANGE THE
CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT because I am going to build a building 12 ft.
by 16 ft. with non-enclosed porches, making total outside dimensions
of 16 ft. by 24 ft. in the most remote and inaccessible portion
of a 15 acre parcel. No one else will know it's there. It will
not be used as a residence; and if the property is ever developed
for residential purposes, it would undoubtedly be torn down because
of poor workmanship. I intend to use lumber cut on the property
to as great an extent as possible and to spend less than $500
on the project.

Attention: Mr. Terry
Gentlemen:
Enclosed herewith you will find an Application for
a Building Permit, which I know you will have to turn
dOl.n because of Section 280a of the Town Law, together
with an Appeal under Sub-Section 3 of that section.
While you may find the enclosed documents to be a little
unusual, I can only say that my building project is a
little unusual, and to be more explicit, my wife thinks
1'm crazy.
I own 15 acres of land in Mattituck. During the
winter months, whenever I am able, I go up to this
property and chop down trees and clear paths for exercise.
I don't do it in the summer because in the summer I can
hide from people on my boat. Furthermore, the place is
full of poison ivy.
I have built a platform on a high peak from which
I can see not only the Sound but also the Bay, and on a
very clear day the Ocean. I want to put a roof and four
walls on it and a stove in it so that I can sit there,
look and think and write. I also hope to ski on the
slopes when there is snow and be able to get warm. It
will probably take me a long time to build it, and it may,
in fact, never get built, in which case my wife will say,
"I told you so."
I hope that this variance may be granted.
