Re: Cutchogue Landfill TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
Gas Well Monitoring Program DEPT,OF SOLID WASTE
SOHT 07-01
Dear Mr. Bunchuck:
As detailed in our letter proposal dated November 17, 2006, our office conducted a round of monitoring
for the methane gas well monitoring program for the Town of Southold Sanitary Landfill located on
Middle Road (CR 48) in Cutchogue. The monitoring program was conducted on September 21, 2007 for
the fifteen (15) gas monitoring wells at the southwest, south and southeast perimeter of the landfill.
Figure 1 is provided which indicates the location of the gas monitoring wells at the landfill. The field
program included the measurement of oxygen and combustible gases for each of the wells as required by
NYSDEC.
H2M utilized an MSA Orion Multi-gas Detector to monitor for oxygen and combustible gas (percent of
lower explosive limit [LEL]) from the sampling ports of the gas monitoring wells. The following table
summarizes the findings of the September 21,2007 gas monitoring program:
Percent
Gas Probe LEL Percent Oxygen
GMW-1 0 20.0
GMW-2 0 18.2
GMW-3 0 20.5
GMW-4 0 20.6
GMW-5 0 20.6
GMW-6 100+ 3.1
GMW-7 0 17.8
GMW-8 0 17.4
GMW-9 0 20.0
GMW-10 0 10.2
GMW-11 100+ 3.3
GMW-12 0 17.5
GMW-13 2 14.5
GMW-14 1 17.2
GMW-15 0 18.8

The results indicate that there is currently a threat of combustible gas migrating beyond the boundary of
the landfill in the vicinity of GMW-6 and GMW-1l located in the southeast and east portions of the
landfill. The next quarterly round of monitoring is expected to be conducted during December 2007.
If any questions arise concerning the gas monitoring program, please contact the undersigned at (63 1)

Very truly yours,
