Re:. Cutchogue Landfill
Gas Well Monitoring Program DEPT. OFSOtU H0-L—D
SOHT 06-01WASTE
Dear 1Ntn Bi-ir'h2jok:
As detailed in our letter proposal dated May 23, 2006 our office conducted a round of monitoring for the
methane gas well monitoring program for the Town of Southold Sanitary Landfill located on Middle
Road (CR 48) in Cutchogue. The monitoring program was conducted on September 12, 2006 for the
fifteen(15) gas monitoring wells at the southwest, south and southeast perimeter of the landfill. Figure 1
is provided which indicates the location of the gas monitoring wells at the landfill. The field program
included the measurement of oxygen and combustible gases for each of the wells as required by
NYSDEC.
The H2M personnel utilized an MSA Orion Multi-gas Detector to monitor for oxygen and.combustible
gas (percent of lower-explosive limit'[LEL]) from the sampling ports of the gas monitoring wells.- The
following table summarizes the findings of the September 12,2006 gas monitoring program:
Percent
Gas Probe LEL Percent Oxygen
GMW-1 0 19.5
GMW-2 0 20.5
GMW-3 0 19.6
GMW-4 0 20.1
GMW-5 4 11.3
GMW-6 98 11.9
MI's'-' ;; 5.3
GMW-8 0 15.3
GMW-9 0 19.2
GMW-10 3 14.4
GMW-11 >100 0.4
GMW-12 0 17.4
GMW-13 0 17.5
GMW-T4 0 18.0
GMW-15 0 18.4
The results indicate that there`is-currently a threat of combustible gas migrating beyond the boundary.,of
the landfill mi ""fie!vicinity of GMW-6 and GMW-11 located in the northeast and east portions of the

landfill. The test results in the June 2006 round of monitoring were consistent with these results for all
the gas monitoring wells. I recoinmend that the Town consider an'off-site gas monitoring program for
those properties in the vicinity of GMW-6 and GMW-11. Our office is available to discuss the options
with the Town for the off-site monitoring. The next quarterly round of monitoring is expected to be
conducted during December 2006. If any questions arise concerning the gas monitoring program, please
contact our office at(631)756-8000 Ext. 1610.
Very truly yours,
