NOTES
1. Local codes and/or applicable regulations should be reviewed and complied with
in construction.
2. The depth of the foundation footings is determined by the frost line; refer to
local standards. The footing bearing areas shown should be adequate for most
soils. The 8" foundation wall thickness is a nominal dimension; 7-5/8" con-
crete blocks can be utilized. The 2 x 6 sill should be fastened to the founda-
tion with ~" diameter steel anchor bolts imbedded in the foundation spaced
nominally 5' apart, or as dictated by local code. The inside slab and the out-
side apron can be omitted if desired, alternatively utilizing crushed stone,
nominally ~" size.
3o Dimensional details ~hown on Sheet 3 are ~r structural lumber thicknesses and
widths measuring ~" less than the nominal S~gures shown, i.e., a 2 x 4 member
is considered to be 1~" x 3~'~ etc. If actual lumber varies ~rom the foregoing,
adjustments are required.
4. Lateral stiffness of the front wall is achieved from the diagonal 2 x 4 members
at the upper corners of the door openings~ and from ~" thick exterior grade
plywood installed vertically, a section 2' wide by 7'-11~" high over each side
structure of the front wall, and a section 4' wide by 7'-11~" high over the
center structure, as shown on Sheet 2~ Additional plywood is installed to
maintain a flush surface across the wall. The elliptical shape at the top of
each door opening is achieved by affixing the ends of a cord or string, 8'-6"
long~ to points '~" and '~" (as shown on Sheet 4), and drawing the point of a
pencil along the apex of the extended legs formed by the string when dragon
taut (as at point "C"). The major axis of the ellipse is 17" below the bottom
of the front girder, as shown on Sheet 4. Three types of garage doors are
shown: hinged, sliding ~by-passing), and roll-~p (overhead). The sliding type
is diS~icult to make weathertighto
5. The dr~oings reflect 1 x ~0 ship-lap boards as exterior wall covering, over
the plywood sheathing on the ~Wont wall (see 4 above), and over blocking on
the side and rear walls, which latter walls are stiffened by diagonal I x 4
bracing let into the studs, plates, and sills° The blocking and bracing may
be eliminated if plywood sheathing is used on all walls, either as combined
sheathing and finished surface, such as results with Texture One Eleven or
equal, or with battens to simulate board and batten siding, or as a nailing
base (use ~" thickness) for shingles, weatherboards, etc~ Detail '~' on
Sheet 2 is a method of accommodating 8' lengths of plywood utilized as
bined sheathing and finished surface; if used~ liners must be placed behind
the ~scia below the lap lineo
6° Roo/~ng can be either wood~ plastic or asphalt shingles.
7° Disappearing stairs are proposed for access to the second floor (manufacturers
p~ovide the rough opening dimensions)~ The opening requires headers between
the joists, with at least one joist doubled up, depending on the location of
the unit.
6o The cupola roof can be covered with sheet copper, aluminum, or fiberglass.
The truncated sphere at the roof top can be wood, or hollow copper (use a
toilet ball float)~ with the bottom sector sawn off, or bent in, respectively°
The weathervane, compass symbols, an~rod can be copper~ alur~inum, galvanized
iron, etc.
9. A carved name-board 9'-~6" x 7" x 1'~ hung above the doors, adds a nice finish-
ing touch.
