W. 74th Ave. Miami, FL 33166 Re ~ New York State Energy Conservation Construction Code Dear Mr. Marotta: I have reviewed the New York State Energy Conservation Construction Code and the Training Manual in connection with the U-value requirements for glazed windows. The method used in preparing your chart dated Dec. 7, 1978 is correct and in complete agreement with the Code and with the ASHRAEdesign rules. Calculations made in accordance with the Code guidelines indicates that anal~inum window or sliding glass door without a thermal break but using~h~I p~oper insulating glass will meet the minimum0.69 U value required by the Cods. The calculated Values based on the above Code rules will be as follows: Unit G%ass Air Space UG 0ve~all thickness noo~ 3/8" l/~" .63 ~oor J/8" 3~" .58 Window 5~8" 3Z8" .63 wxmow l~Z" 1/~" .69 ~imow 172', 5/16" .~ Please be aware that windows with single glass or with insulating glass'havinga U value g~eater than .58" will not comply with the above energy Code. I mm the owner of the Construction Research L~bo~tory and am a former Research Assistmnt P~ofesso=, Housing Research L~bomatozy at the Uni- versity of Miami. I ope~ted the Housing ReseaEh L~bo~atory for thirteen years until May 1968 when the University closed the laboratory. At that time I purchased the labor- atomy from the University and changed the name to Construction Research Laboratory since the new name is more descriptive of our normal activity. In my twenty-two years of testing building products, I have labo~tory tested 900 ~ll- size cumin walls and 1700 windows, doors and related products. In addition I have conducted on&site inspection and/or testing of exterior facades on mo~e than 150 build- ings located th~ou~out the United States, plus in C~nada, Jamaica, B~zil, HongKong, and The Bahamas. Although the field inspection and testing p~i~rily concerns Water leakage and sealant failures, about 10% of these inspections have dealt with glass and glazing problems. I am a member of the ~meric~n Chemical Society and am a fellow in the American Institute of Chemists. I have been a member of A~TM Committee E-6 on Pem~form~nce of Building Con- structions for 17 years and am an active p~rticipant in the sub-committee charged with developing window and w~ll performance specifinations. I was a consultant to the Port of New York Authority on the World ~de Center and to the Architect and Owner on Sears Tower. I prepared window testing and performance specificatione for the New York State Orb~n Development Corpom~tion. My laboz~to~y is approved by the Architectural Aluminum Manufacturers Association (A~MA) and the Associated I~llas Labom~tories. FOllowing?re some of my recent professional activities: Conducted glazing seminars for Flat Glass Marketing Association in Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, and Detroit. Have spoken at University of Wisconsin seminars on glazing or testing of windows and walls five times, including a seminar in February 1977. Wrote two papers for the ASTM symposium on window and wall testing in 1972. Recipient of AAMA Charles Matin Hall Award in 1974. H~ve spoken on wall Water leakage or testing at the Building Research Institute (BRI), Glass and Metal Iustitute, Architect~l Aluminum Manufacturers Association, National Association of~.rchitectum~l Metal Manufacturers (NAAMM), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Southeast I~thing and Plastering Association, and the New Yom~k City Chapter of AIA and other pmofessional gmoups. CUStom .specialized testing of most extezlor construction products. We 'do not offer a curtain wall concept design service. We feel that the basic wall design concepts should be the product of the Architect and that the design details should be by the wall subcontractors. Our 1SAnction would be to review the ~zopriety of the details and choice of m~terials when we critique the dmawings. All services including laboz~tory tests should be conducted in behalf of the Owner so that there is no communication problem in reporting results and in expressing concerns for weak or faulty details. Tests should be scheduled well in advance of the need for materials on the job'so that if deficiencies are disclosed by the tests, there is suf- ficient time to make the required changes without delaying the job. In addition to our many years experience in testing, we believe you will find that we have the most extensive test facilities in the country for testin~ building p~oducts for static air infiltration, static water infiltration, dynamic water infiltration, structux~l performance, and thez~al cycling. We have more than twenty test chambers plus all the.necessary equipment for performing ASTM, AAMA, and NAAMM wall, window, and door tests. We have performed such services for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on the World ~k~ade Center, for the Owner on Sears Tower, and for the Owner on the new Citicorp Center in New York. ~ollowing is a brief list of some of the more prominent curtain wall mockups we have tested: World Trade Center (New York City) Sears Tower (Chicago) Standard Oil (Chicago) General Motor~ ('New York City) Citicorp (New York City) U.
