Box 1412 Southold N.Y. 11971 516- 765 ' 5455 O TRUS JOIST TRUSS INSTALLATION INFORMATION ERECTION BRACING Erection bracing for Trus Joist Corporation open web trusses Is required to prevent lateral buckling of the chord members until adequate stability is available by connection to the sheathing and permanent bracing of the completed structure as designed. This erector bracing includes 1 ) strut bracing rows, 2) cross bracing at bottom chord beanng condibons, 3) bottom chord restraint and 4) sway bracing and other braced end wall or diaphragm restraint adequate to support the strut bracing rows. The criteria used for this erection bracing assumes a truss has the weight of Itself plus the weight of the sheathing to be applied to the truss and two 175 lb. men concentrated at 1/3 points of the span, or an unloaded truss with a 30 m.p.h, wind. Bracing for construction loads beyond these or equivalent Feeds Is the responsibility of the erector. Bracing must be instaged as each truss is put in posihon. TYPICAL APPLICATION Clear spent over 70 feet and other extraordinary app~ica[ions require special erection bracmg - see ether sheets BOTTOM CHORD RESTRAINT Bottom chord restraint ~s requited to stabilize the bottom chord NOTE. 1 x 4 mm. nailer or a strut brace attached to top of bottom chord w~th 1 -Sd nad in each chord member The nailer & bridging requirements for the TJL Sarma satisfies the bottom chord restraint needs. WEIGHTS FOR OPEN WEB TRUSSES TJL 3.3/4 to 4 1/4 TJ/50 4 to 5 TJ/60 4-3/4 to 5.3t4 TJM 8 to 9 TJH 10 to 12 These are the approximate weights of joists. I JOBSITE STORAGE I While being stored et the Jobsite the bundles should be supported on level stickers to keep the joists out of the mud and dirt. It is okay to stack the bundles as long as an adequate number of stickers are provided to prevent damage, and normal safety precautions are followed. During storage at the jobsite, joists should be given the same protection from weather as is normal with other wood pro- ducts. NAILING OF SHEATHING TO CHORD MEMBERS MAXIMUM SPACING MINIMUM SPACING NAIL SIZE DIA, Nailing pattern to be per plans and specifi- cations. In no case shall nail spacing be more than as shown in each chord member Nails shell not be less than 8d or greater than 16d, at least 1/2". CROSS BRACING Cross bracing is required for open web joists which have bottom chord bearing at one or both ends. 500 rb per Trus Joist Corpo ~ SWAY BRACING Sway bracing or a braced end wall or diaphragm is required to provide a support for the strut bracing rows distributing their loads to the basic lateral strength of the structure. Because of the many field conditions the selectlon of adequate means of support for the strut bracing rows Is to be determined by t he erector. If Trus Jolt Corporation has been requested to design and provide a sway brace system, its details are included in these drawfngs. I DIMENSIONAL CONTROL I This symbol ~ ' ' ~ represents a critical dimension for your approval. It is a clear span dimension which the joists will be designed to fit. The dimensional accuracy of the supporting structure and the proper placement and location of the joists and accessory items is The bearing plate must be on the ledger, well plate or beam as detailed. Maximum overhang of the bearing clip ia 1/4 inch for the TJL, TJH, TJ/50 and TJ/60 Series joists and 1/2 inch for the TJM Series joists. I JOBSITE HANDLING OF OPEN WEB TRUSSES I It is the building contractor's responsibility to unload the joists from the truck and for all handling thereafter; the Trus Joist Corporation Guarantee only applies so long as the product is not damaged or altered in any way and is installed in a workmanlike manner and according to directions from the piecing plans and bearing details. Joists will be delivered to the jobsite in bu nd les of tweet y or less Jolts a nd come banded together for handling and shipment. To avoid damage they should be left in these bundles until they are ready to he installed in the structure. Miscellaneous hardware such as bearing angles (some M and H condlEons) lag screws, bolts, nails as required by each specific Job are shipped with the joists and come in bags or boxes. Bridging material and pre-cut blocking items, ~f furnished by the manufacturer, will come bundled and banded. A careless crane or forklift operator can damage the wood chords or steel webs. Never handle joists flat-- keep in upright position. [ ,'i: v~re Plant P 3 ~hx 3g7 '" -~''~ 4~015 WARNING IMPORTANT. READ GENERAL NOTES AND STUDY DRAWINGS Fedure to follow these instructions and drawings may be dangerous to personal safety or property. Do not permit cutting, drilling or damage of the chords or webs. Do not remove steel pas or webs (even temporarily), Do not make field repairs to damaged trusses without written approval of manufacturer. Do not overload single or groups of trusses with plywood, roofing, or other construction materials or tools. Problems may occur in attempts to realign trusses. Align each truss and place it perma- nently in position as it is connected to the bracing system. Once there is a load, even from the weight of the truss ~tself, large lateral forces are developed by attempts to reabgn the trusses. This may break the bracing system. All trusses are unstable laterally until properly braced. The longer the span the more care re- qmred, Adequate restraint is necessary at all stages of construction. Cpmplete stability is not achieved until the brac- ing and decking is completely installed and pro- perly fastened. Erection. bracing and orocedures, as well as the safety of the workers, are the responsibdity of the erector. MAXIMUM 1/2" When properly aliqned each top chord should not vary more than 1/2 inch from a straight line. \ The vertical alignment can not be more than 1/2 inch out of plumb, I GENERAL NOTES I Please approve and return these drawings as soon as possible. Joists will not be fabricated and delivered until approval is received. Manufacturer's engineering responsibility is only for the engineering of the joists and not for any supporting structure, or for loads other than indicated herein. All materials shall be furnished by others unless speciflcag y noted "by manufactu reP' herein. Accessory items such as pre-notched plates, blocking, bracing, bridging, etc., must be properly installed as erection proceeds. All holes in bridging clips, bearing clips and bracing members must be filled with nails. Attach bridging before any load is applied.
