Dear Mr. Eilers:
Let me begin by offering an apology for the delay in
this letter.
I have your check #882 in the amount of $15 for the
Stritzler C,O. The problem was that the amount you
sent was too much, the amount due is $5.00.
Please send us a new check for $5.00 and I will do
the C.O. for you. I am returning the old check.
Thank you.

Protection Against Termites
Protection Against Termites
General--Wood structural material and assem-
blies attacked by termites may become structural-
ly unsound. In localities where such insects are
known to exist, suitable protection against in-
festatlon and destruction is to be provided. In-
formation about areas of the state subject to
various degrees of infestation may be obtained
kern the College of Forestry, State University of
New York, Syracuse 10, New York..
Drainage: The site of the building should be
well drained. Moist soil conditions are favorable
to termites.
Foundations: Foundation walls should be with-
out voids through which termites can travel.
Poured concrete is the most satisfactory, as long
as no cracks develop. Block or brick walls or
piers should have all joints well filled with mor-
tar, and should be capped with a continuous slab
of reinforced concrete, 6 inches thi&. Walls con-
taining voids should be plastered down to the
footings with cement mortar.
Wood and paper refuse: All wood and paper
scraps, wood concrete forms, wood spreaders in
concrete walls, and stumps under or adjacent to
buildings and accessible to termites, should be
Inspection by owner: Periodic inspections will
reveal termite infestation before damage has
been done. Provisions should be made to facilitate
such inspection, especially in locations where
major structural members are accessible to ter-
mites. Spaces under porches should be inspected
regularly.
Required Proieeflon~Major structural mem-
bers, sudh as wood sills and wood ~irdcrs, are to
be not iezs than ~$ inches ahove the outside ground
surface, 'and no~t less than lg inches above an in-
side ground surface, such as the ground surface
of a crawl space.
Members to he protected: Protection is to be
provided to wood sills, girders, and joists above
crawl spaces, and to wood sills which are less
than 18 inches above a ground surface; also to
wood sills which are in ]ocatlous accessible to.
termite shelter tubes, where such tubes cannot
be observed readily. Wood sills accessible from
ground surface under porches are to be protected.
Acceptable Forms of Protection--Where re-
quired, one of the following forms of protection
is to be provided: poisoning of the adjoining soil;
use of wood inherently termite resistant; use of
wood treated to be termite resistant; or use of
properly installed metal termite shields.
Soil Poisoning: Soil poisons give protection for
five years or more. Acceptable soil poisons are:
sodium arsenite, coal-tar creosote, trlchloroben-
zene, orthodichlorobenzene, pentachlorophenol.
Dosage for deep foundations is to be 1 gallon
of chemical per linear foot of trench, and, for
shallow foundations, ~ gallon of chemical per
linear foot of trench, or dosage equivalent to 2
gallons of chemical per 5 cubic feet of soil. Ap-
plication of soil poisons is to be in accordance
with recommendations contained in DA, Subter-
ranean Termites, Their Prevention and Control in
Buildings.
It should be noted that sodium arsenite is ex-
tremely poisonous, and that the other chemicals
are irritant to the skin. They are also injurious to
plants. Chemicals that have strong odors should
not be used where food is stored, or in basement
apartments, cellars, or other places where there
is poor ventilation. They should not be used near
a well or other exposed source of drinking water
as once the chemicals reach it, the water will ab-
sorb their odors and may become unfit for use
for a long time. Open packages or containers of
soil poisons should nat be stored where children
or pets can get to them. Soil poisons dissolved
in flammable liquids are fire hazardous. Care
should be taken to avoid open flames or electric
sparks when applying flammable soil poisons,
such as mixtures containing fuel oil, in poorly
ventilated spaces..
Woods Naturally Resistant to Termltes--
Woods naturally resistant to termites include the
heartwood of foundation-grade redwood, tide-
water-red cypress, very pitchy (lightwood) long-
leaf pine, and western red cedar.
Treated Wood--Treated wood, to be aceept-
able, is required to be pressure-impregnated with
wood preservative, as apecified for wood not in
contact with the ground nor in water, in FS,
Wood Preservatives; Recommended Treating
Practice.

consideration.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA UNDER TEST
General Requirements
Buildings and their structural components subiect to this Code
shall, when submitted to the tests set forth in this section, meet
the performance critena prescribed for each test. Fadure to meet
the test criteria shall be evidence of noncompliance with this
Code.
Under Imposed Load
When the assembly reacts by bending under the uniformly dis-
tributed imposed load, excluding impact, the deflection shall not
exceed 1/360 of the span when the reside is to be plastered.
When the inside is not to be plastered, the deflection shall not ex-
ceed I/240 of the span. When a roof ~s not to be used as a prom-
enade, and the underside is not to be plastered, the deflection
shall not exceed 1/180 of the span.
Under 1 t/2 Times Imposed Load
a--Under its dead load and 1 Y2 times the uniformry distributed
imposed load, excluding impact, the assembly shall sustain the
load without structural damage. In testing floor assemblies and
assemblies in compression, the load shall be applied twice,
b--For floor assemblies, the residual deflection from first appli-
cation of the load shall not exceed 25 per cent of the maximum
deflection under load. After the second application of the load,
the total residual deflection shall be not mom than 1.1 times the
residual deflection resulting from the first application of the load.
Under Two Times Imposed Load
Under its dead load and two times the uniformly distributed im-
posed load, excluding impact, the floor, roof, and wall assembly
shall sustain load without structural failure, for a minimum of 24
hours.
Impact Loads
Under an impact ~oad of 60 pounds falling 4 feet for floors, 11/2
feet for walls, roofs and nonbearing partitions enclosing dwelling
units, on an area 10 inches in diameter, applied perpendicular to
the assembly at its center, lhe assembly shall sustain no'structural
damage.
A 306-6
(635.6)
Racking Loads
Where exterior walls and partitions react by racking, the racking
deformation, while the assembly is sustaining the imposed load,
shall not exceed 11400 of the height of the wall. Under 1 ¥2 times
the load there shall be no structural damage, and under two
times the load there shall be no structural failure.
A 306-7
(635.7)
Transmitted Loads
Fastenings and connectipns shall be capable of transmitting,
without failure, twice the loads for which they are designed.

EXTERIOR PROTECTION
General Requirements
Whenever structural materials or assemblies are subiect to
deterioration and may become structurally unsound under the
proposed condition of use, adequate protection shall be provid-
ed.
A 307-2
(636.2)
Exterior Materials
The exterior facing or covering of walls and roofs shall be msis-
tam to the causes of deterioration as set forth in section A 301c,
without loss of strength or attachment which may render it unfit
for use. The materials of such exterior facing or covering shall be
treated if necessary to give the required protection.
A 307-3
(636.3)
Flashing
Whenever water can penetrate the exterior or cause damage to
the interior of the assembly or structure, flashi[~g or other barrier
shall be provided to prevent its entrance or to redirect it outward.
A 307-4 Waterproofing
(636.4) a--Foundation wails of cellars and basements, and floors in
contact with the soil, shall be constructed or treated so as to pre-
vent the penetration of ground and surface water.
b--Metallic structural elements in exterior wails not inherently
corrosion resistant shall be protected against the effects of rain
and ['aoJsture. __
