REGULAR MEETING
August 17, 2022 HELD IN PERSON (and via Zoom)
7:00 PM
Present: Gerard Orientale, Erick Haas, Jay Jansen, Derek Bossen and Martha Reichert, Esq., of
Twomey, Latham& Shea
This Regular Meeting of the Southold Town Tree Committee was called to order at 7:05 PM—this
was an in-person meeting and held via the Zoom Platform. There were no Zoom Attendees.
Discussion Items:
In attendance at our meeting was Martha Reichert from the law firm Twomey,Latham, Shea,Kelly
& Quartararo, Riverhead, New York. Ms. Reichert was representing the Fishers Island
Development Corp., to relay their concerns about a future Tree Code for Southold Town. Fishers
Island Development Corp. who owns a substantial amount of property on Fishers, requests that
Southold Town try to be"open minded"when adopting such a Code, specifically taking into mind
that the entire Island is a unique piece of land. Their hope is to be exempted completely from such
Code as they feel the creation of the Code would create an undue burden on them.
Gerard advised Ms. Reichert that the Committee was requested by the Town Board to create a
draft of the Code; that we are not trying to be the "Tree Police" but that we recognize a real need
to have one. She requested to be kept informed on how the legislation may be written up. Gerard
requested that she provide us with a list of her concerns.
Jay informed us about his and Frank's trip to Fishers Island on August 3 for the Annual Town
Board Meeting.
We reviewed Curtis Rand's email which contained a list of various tree species that he feels would
do well on Fishers Island. We will try to coordinate with Dan @ Highway Department to see
about possibly getting the trees over to Fishers on one of the Highway Department trips there, and
then we will organize getting the trees planted.
Erick and Derek will continue to look for suitable tree planting spots around Town. Erick reported
that the Cherry tree by Tasker Park is now good and the plaque has been located.
We then discussed the logistics and design of the "door hangers" which will get hung on
homeowner's doors at potential planting spots throughout the Town.
We will next meet on September 21, 2022—In Person and via Zoom. This meeting was adjourned
at 8:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Diane DiSalvo
