Subject: Floor and Roof Deck~ Cathy Odhner Residence~
Robinson Lane.
Dear Mr. Hindman:
Persuant to our conversation on 25 July 1978; i have rechecked
the floor deck calculations for the subject project~ and am
glad you brought your questions to my attention.
After our conversa%ion~ I reveiwed the enclosed Weyerhaeuser
table with Weyerhaeuser and found that contrary to my previous
information~ "Max. allowable load (P.S.F.)" means "Total load
(P.S.F.)"~ not live load.
Therefore~ I have revised the structural diagram for the floor
(Bedrooms ~2 & ~3) as shown on the accompanying prints~ and
enclosed computa%ions~ based on Weyerhaeuser tables for 1/~80
and 1/240 deflection.
Although the structure would no doubt be adaquate as originally
shown~ I must %hank you for saving me some embarassmen% with my
client for a "bouncy" floor.

Laminated Decking
DESCRIPTION
Weyerhaeuser® Laminated Decking consists of three plys kiln-dried to a
uniform moisture content (maximum 16%) before they are surfaced and
bonded. Hem-Fir is manufactured to a nominal 6" width, ponderosa
pine is available in nominal 8" width.
Generally, all three plys of decking are of the species named; however,
ponderosa pine decking may have cores and backs of Hem-Fir or
Douglas fir, at plant option. All three plys of Hem-Fir are Hem-Fir.
The standard surface is a machine sanded face. (On special inquiry,
faces can be cross sanded for saw textured effect, or wtre brushed in
minimum quantities of 5 MBF.)
Laminated Decking/Prestalned
Weyerhaeuser Laminated Decking i.s available prestained in any color
of Olympic semi-transparent stain (except 706 and 713). This type of
stain, while pigmented, allows the grain and texture of the wood to show
through. A wide range of colors is offered, suitable for both interior and
exterior use. Available only on orders for $,000 or more board feet.
Prestained decking is slip-sheeted for protection and packaged in units.
USES
Roof and floor decking for churches, schools, homes, apartments,
institutional, commercial and industrial construction.
SIZES
Ponderosa Pine: Available in nominal widths of 8", in
2-1/4", 3" and 3-3/4" net thicknesses.
Hem-Fir: Available in nominal 6" width, and in the
following net thicknesses: 2-1/4"; 3"; plus 3-3/4" and
4-1/2" on special inquiry only.
LENGTHS
Manufactured in lengths of 8' to 20'; trimmed to nearest
inch. Pieces T' or more short of a full foot are tallied at the
next shorter foot.
Decking Length Mix*
2-1/4" 30% 8 & 10'; 55%

3" 20°/o 6 & 10'; 45% 11 - 14';
35% 15' & longer
Spec~hed Lengths
Subject to Special Inquiry
*Percenfages based on board foot measure.
3-3/4" & 4-1/2"
For spans exceeding 16', a specified length pattern should
be used. Consult Laminated Sales Representative for
assistance in determining length selections. Specified
length decking may contain scarf joint on face and will be
1/4" narrower than standard width.
FACE APPEARANCE GRADE~
Architectural -- Use where attractive natural
appearance is a requirement. Occasional face plys may
have some but not all of the following normal growth
characteristics; occasional pin holes, short splits or
checks, medium torn grain (including shelling), light skips
in surfacing, and sound tight knots (no kno,t~oles),up to 2"
in diameter in Hem-Fir and up to 3-3-1/2 for 6' and 8"
Ponderosa Pine. For a more definitive description, refer
to paragraph 30.13 and l18-b in 1970 WWPA Grading
Rules.
Utility -- Use in commercial/industrial applications
where a greater number of natural growth characteristics,
including knotholes and open defects in the face, are
acceptable. These characteristics have no effect on
structural strength or other serviceability and should be
considered only from an appearance standpoint. Utility
grade is available on inquiry only. A reliability should be
checked before making commitment to your client.
Note: Pressure treatments of laminated deck for normal
architectural uses are not recommended. When
specifications require pressure treatment, special inquiry
must be made to the plant prior to order acceptance. In
some of these cases the physical properties and
appearance of the Laminated Decking will be altered by
various commercially available treatments, and the end
user must be aware of and agree to this before the order is
accepted.

SPAN ARRANGEMENTS
Random Length
Random length pieces laid in continuous pattern can only
be applied over four** or more supports (three or more
spans) with all joints end matched. End joints must be at
least 24" apart in adjacent courses and at least 12" apart if
separated by one course of deck. Pieces must rest on at
least one support with not more than one joint between
supports in each course. In any 12" wide cross section of
deck parallel to supports, the number of end joints must
not exceed one-third the number of decking courses.
Random Layup Simple Span
Simple Span
In simple span construction, each piece of decking is
supported at both ends, Install single span length pieces
wilt all end joints on supports.
**W~th less than four supports a special pattern requiring specified lengths
must be used.
ESTIMATING QUANTITY
The following table gives factors for converting from
square feet to board feet for ordering purposes. Waste
factors not included because decking is end matched and
waste held to a minimum.

NAILING
1. Use a short block ol laminated decking for driving
each course of decking tight [y in place. Do not hammer
the tongue.
2. Install decktng with tongues up on pitched rooI~. On
flat roofs tongues should be outward in direction of
laying.
3. Usc extreme care when attempting to install an
occasional crooked or warped board. (Extremely
crooked or warped boards should be either discarded
or set aside to be cut and used at the end ct the course
as a "short" piece.)
4. First, thsten decking to supportmg members by nailing
through decking with nad size shown in ,?aragr,a, ph 6.
Use two nails per crossing lor nominal 6 and 8 wide
decking and three nails per crosstng lbr nominal lO"
wide decking. Then secure adjacent rows by toenailing
at maximum 30" centers, staggering locations in
adjacent courses. Drive at an angle of 40~' to 50°
starting within 12" lrom end ol each decking piece and
I" to 1%" in [rom edge ol groove.
Recommended nailing methods given here should be
checked for conlormance with local building codes.
Longer nails may be reqmred I or lastening the decking

winds.
To conceal wiring rout top o! decktng parallel to span
at mid-width. Routing perpendicular to decking span
shall be done only as directed by competent engineer to
assure sufficient structural adequacy of remaining
