It is obvious that traffic and speeding on Fishers Island has increased over the past year.
Whistler Avenue is a densely populated area and serves as the main road to the ferry, the
school, Waste Management, Island Peoples Project's Summer Camp, and the airport and has
seen a real increase in traffic speed. This observation is anecdotal, however, it is shared by
many of the avenue's residents.
We, the undersigned, request that the Town Board of Southold and the Island Community
Board immediately review the island traffic and speeding situation and in particular Whistler
Avenue, and put into place a means to enforce the traffic speed limits. Given the summertime
population and the number of children biking on the road, this is a real public safety issue that
needs to be immediately addressed.
Although the signage in the area may be a cause of some confusion, it does not affect or deter
vehicles from driving at an unsafe speed in a densely populated area. There are five traffic
speed signs in the area and four are yellow signs.
