Dear Town Leadership: I am passionate about living in our town and deeply value this unique community we seek to keep beautiful. We claim to be a bucolic, civic minded and environmentally considerate community, yet we have incessant displays of fireworks both public displays and illegal usage by our residents which rarely gets enforced. Consequently, the impact on our pets, all wildlife, children with autism, veterans with PTSD can be devastating and traumatic. 1 As a pet owner and parent and someone with deep respect for neighbors, our many veterans and our wildlife, I can't tell you how debilitating this holiday really is. We must secure our home, medicate our pets, draw the shades and create audible diversions to get through several days of continuous fireworks. The impact on pets lasts for days, shaking, seizures, gastrointestinal problems continue on even afterwards. No pet, child, or veteran should endure this, especially when there are alternatives and better, more considerate ways to celebrate this important holiday. The debilitating impact for wildlife is clearly documented, that wildlife is a unique treasure of the North Fork. I ask that you consider options possibly like the below alternative, consider our Town's commitment to its community and wildlife, and in earnest, develop a strategy so Southold can demonstrate a leadership approach protecting its residents, environment and wildlife. I greatly appreciate all you do for us, the dreaded anticipation of this holiday provokes me to reach out yet again. I am asking friends and neighbors to join me in messaging to our elected town leadership. I look forward to your attention. Thank you, and have a safe Independence Day Holiday.
