[.~.~ Youngs Avenue Orient, New York March 8, 1966 Mr. L~ter A~bertson, Supervisor $outhold TownshiD $outhold, New York Dear Mr. Albertson: W~ understand that Dermission to construct a building for Cavil Defense on the northwest corner of Route 25 and Youngs Avenue in Orient is being sought from the Southold Town Zoning Board. W, wish to protest as strongly as possible the granting of Dermission to use the proDert¥ for this purDose. In a telephone conversation Monday with Mr. William Schri~ver, who is seeking permission for th~ use of this Droperty by the Civil Defense group, we learned that the existing house would be moved and that the new building would probably be a two-.. story cement block structure with two oversized garage doors opening onto Route 25. A third garage door would oDen onto Youngs Avenue where mechanical work including a grease pit would be located as well as parking facilities for members. The building would also contain one or two small meeting rooms and rest rooms. There are both personal and civic reasons for our hoping that permission for this building will be denied. We live on Youngs Avenue and feel that the construction of this building and the use of it for the purpose intended would detract from the beauty of the area, perhaps create a noise problem when mech- anical work was in progress~ add to the problem of a difficult intersection, and undoubtedly would lower property values. Among the older homes on Youngs Avenue, there are a number of attractive new houses, and locating the Civil Defense building on this street could not fail to decrease their desirability~ make resales difficult, and generally lower their value. We do not know what justification the Zoning Board must receive in order to sanction such an operation. However, it seems to us that the reason for this proposed building cannot be the need for a place to hold meetings. Certainly Orient abounds in meeting halls of one type or another. It seems that the primary purpose would be for the sto~age and upkeep of the Civil Defense vehicles, and why one of the most attractive areas in the village - across from the monu- ment and the historic buttonwood tree~ near the beautiful Congregational Church and the new school and across from the old -2- Bliss house- should have been chosen as the site for a garage is difficult to understand. Certainly this site is not unique in having at its disposal a well-kept road since there are many roads in Orient which are open regardless of weather conditions. Local business men such as Mr. Robert Douglass~ Mr. Irving Latham, Mr. Roscoe King~ and Mr. Frank Bondarchuck~ who have far more heavy equipment to move have not found it necessary to construct their garages in one of the most observed and scenic spots of the Village in order to carry out their operations regardless of season. Civil Defense is important and the men who participate in it are to be commended~ but surely a more appropriate place for their garage can be located. Mr. Schriever deserves the gratitude of all our residents for his interest in and his most ~enerous contributions of time and money to a number of community activities. However, I am sure that he would agree that construction of the Civil Defense building on the proposed site would add nothing of aesthetic Value to the community but rather detract and that the practical value could be achieved in a more appropriate location for a ~arage. I believe that if he were to make his need known to a wide croup of landowners rather than apparently restricting his search to a relatively few advertised sites that a location could be found from which service to the community could be rendered makin~ i% a more desirable place in which to live without in any way detracting from it. Y. March 7, 1966 Southold Zoning Board Southold Town Office Southold, Lomg Island, N. Y. Gentlemen: ~ am goingto make every effort to be at the March 10th hearing on the application of a Mr. William W. Schriever of Orient, who is seeking permission to erect a public garage at the end of Youngs Road, Orient. I am sure you have already visited the site. One can easily see that this is no place for a garage. There has been an empty one at thegas station since last September which is Just diagonally across the street; and while I still don't think this would be satisfactory either, at least it would look a little bit more natural. I urge that you turn down this request. C 0 0 C 0 20 HAV,,'THORN~- AVENUg PoR? ~HgS?~R, N~ YORK March ?, 1966 Mr. Lester Albertson, Supervisor Town of Southold Southold, New York Dear )ir, Albertson: After a weekend in Orient visit~ at the home of our married daughter, my husband and I, who have been summer residents of Orient for twenty-five years, are as distressed as are the year round residents at the report that there may be a Civil Defense buildLn~ erected at the Monument entrance to the Village of Orient. Many individuals and organizations work constantly for the prese~vation and beautification of this lovely old Village and consider this intersection with its historic buttonwood tree and its revered war memorial a most ~mportant part of Orient. A park would be more appropriate than a truck storage buildin~ for this location. If such a Civil Defense building as has been propoded should be desirable, I trust that the Southold Town Zoning Board will find a less conspicuous place for it. Very truly yours, (Mrs. 14~vold %;. Col{roy) P. O. Box 12}, Orient, N. I. 119~37 Ma~h 8, 1~ yr. tester Alberta., Supe~isor, gouthold, N. Y. Dear Mr. Alberteonl We wish to ~ater the strongest possible protest to the proposed use of the property at the comer of Route ~5 and the Village Lane opposite the Monument in Orient, N. ¥. for the erection of a brick building to be used for storing 0ivil Defense Equipment. There must be other locations in Orient where such a building could be placed, if it is necessary to have it, which is a questionable need in abe first place. But to put a storage build- ing at the very entrance to our charming village, with its historic old 0hureh and surrounding lovely hones eeens definitely unoalled for. ~tY wife has been coming to Orient for 6~ years and together we have be~n residents, property owners and State and local taxpayers dinoe 19~.
