This application is submitted for the continuance of
use of sign~ and billboards in behalf of 01audio s Restaurant
located at the lower end of Main Street in Sreenport.
This application is based upon "Hardship.'~
Claudio's Restaurant is located at the dead end of Main
street in Sreenport, directly on the waterfront. It is:
1. Off the usual beaten path or roadway
2. Not on a main highway
3. Signs are necessary in the guidance of clientele.
4. Signs are required to advise clientele of our
whereabouts.
5. Competitors are mostly located on main highways
and thus may not need the type of advertising
that is required in our enterprise.
It is the full desire of Claudio's to abide by the Laws
of our community. However, we must take fully into consid-
eration the necessity to contiDue a business which is of
economic value to both the community, t~ fifty people end
their families, who make up the personnel whom we employ,
and also recognize the fact that this type of business is
basically a summer trade.
With these factors in mind and also that Section 1002
of the Zoning Ordinance grants the Board of Appeals the power
of continuance as follows:
..,"unless their continuance is authorized by the
Board of Appeals"...
We do respectfully request permission to continue use-
age of such signs as we hav~ presently in operation.

After investigation and ~nspection the Board finds that
the applicant request permission to retain directional signs
on the property of S. Ciacia Berate and R. Hrattan Estate.
The applicant has e letter from lt. Hrattan Estate granting
permission for a sign on the property, however, there is no
letter of permission for the sign on the S. Ciacia Estate property.
The Board points out that the size of the signs requested by
the applicant are well beyond the maximum size sign permitted
by the Zoning Ordinance for any section of the Town. However,
the applicant may erect signs, purely of directional nature,
to be no larger than four feet by s~x feet (4'x6'). The
policy of the Board of Appeals has been to provide directional
signs of lhuited size for enterprises that are believed to
be in the~ntarestc~ the travelling public. Included in this
group of enterprises are restaurants and marinas, which are
operations conducted by the applicant.
The Board finds that the public convenience and welfare
and Just/ce will be served and the legally established or
permitted uae of neighborhood property and adjoining use
districts will not be permanently or substant~ally~nJured
and the spirit of the Ord/nance will be observed.
Therefore, it was ItES0~VED that Claudio's ltestaurant, 111
Main Street, Hreenport, Ne~ York, be granted permission to retain
off pre, tees directi~nal signs on theproperty of S. Clacia
Estate, on the north side Main ~oad, Hreenport~ and on the
lt. Grattan Estate, on the south side County Route 27, Mattituck,
New York, subject to the following conditionsl
1. These signs shall be granted for one (1) year only,
renewable annually upon written application to the Board of
Appeals.
2. These signs shall be subject to all subsequent changes
in the Southold Town Zoning Ordinance as it applies to s~gns.
3. Both signs must be reduced in size, to be four feet

4. Both signs must be erected at least five feet from
any pro~ty line.
5. Both signs must be erected at least three feet above
ground level.
6. Both signs must be purely of directional nature, as
distinguished from advertising slgns.
7. Both signs must comply with the above conc~tlons before
