Dear Sir:
On Nov~r 10, the Board of Appeals met to m~ke a decision
relative to the Kreh residential marina application of August
18, a copy of the dec~slon is attached hereto. It points up the
need for a revision of the Zoning Ordinance as regards to the so-
called '°six boat resident~al marina" provis~on0 which theTo~n Board
thought would meet with general approval.
The testimony taken at the August 18 hearing and the ~nformal
discussion after the meeting of November 10, with at least thirty
five or forty people present, en~Dhuizas that present co, troll of
residential marinas is inadequate, in view of the fact that anyone
can construct a dock of varying size with the Town Trustees approval.
~t is impossible to check on whether or not the owner of such a
dock receives compensation for boats which are moored other than
his own.
Probably one hundred fifty people, or more, living on or near
Mattituck Xnlet are deeply concerned. This figure would be greatly
increased if you consider all the creeks, inlets and ~onds, and the
problems created by rapidlly increasing use of boats.
Supervisor Lester M. Albertson
November 17, 1966
Page -2-
Ind~cative of one aspect of the probie~ one boat ~ner has
a sJ~ty foot dock for a small boat. At lo~ tide the dock is out
of water. Also there is the problem of navigat~lg small waterways,
as well as the ~ollution of the town's waterfront. As an example
of pollution, one i~clividual testified that a few years ago the
beach was clean and available for swimming during moat of the
tidal periods, but now most of the t~e this be~h has an oil
slick of scum which extends so~medistance frcc~ the edge of the
ba~k.

Dear Let=
Further reminding you of our conversation todaye it is our
opinion that the Zoning Ordinance should be changed with respect
to the provision that provides for six boat marinas on private
property. We fully understand why the Town Board originally sanctioned
this changee however, extreme strenuous upposition developed, with
which we entirely agree, in the first case to come before the Board.
Some twenty five to thirty people appeare~ in person to object to
the creation of a six boat marina for Mr. Kreh in Mattituck Creek.
Many others signed petitions objecting to this type of use.
ObJections concerned water pollution, increased traffic and
commercialization of what the Town Board originally proposed to be
private property. This provision would tend to co~aercialize some
small real estate operation in a residential area.
Accordingly, it is our opinion that this provision~shouldbe
repelled /mmediately.
Yours very t=uly,

Gentlemen:
Reference: The application of Peter and Rose Kreh of Mattituck,
N.Y. for an exception in accordance with the Zoning Ordinance,
Article III, of Section 300, Subsection 5 (i) for permission
for a marina for the docking, mooring or accomodation of not
more than 6 non-commercial boats. Location of property: Lots
5,6,7 and 8 at Bayview Park, ~attituck, N.Y.
I request the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Town of Southold
to DENY the above referenced application. The down-zoning
required to allow this marina would act as a precedent for
fut~re similar down-zonings along iv~ttituck Inlet, thereby
ruining the residential character of our neighborhood and
causing a decline in my property value. I have inve~ted a lot
of money in this property on the assumption that the area in
this neighborhood that is zoned "A" Residential would remain
so zoned.
Sincerely ,yours,

We of the Brower's Woods Association property

opposed to the proposed marina located on mattituck lnlet

as being opposed to this operation.
We hope that your action in considering this
commercial proposition will be opposed to it as we are.

It has come to my attention that a variance of
the zoning~ to permit the construction of a Marina on

believe it is appeal #940 and filed by a Peter and Rose
Kreh, I own property and a year round home on the Creek
and strongly object to the granting of this appeal and
respectfully urge and request the Board to deny it.
