Smith, President ~ Town Trustees Town of Southold Southold, N.Yo 11971 Dear Mr. Smith: Thank you for your prompt response to my letter of August 25, 1986 (copy attached). As requested in your letter of September 12, 1986, I have prepared a diagram to show how the jetty is to be a~rrang~_d. The rock jetty is approximately 100 ft. long with the first 60 feet averaging 10 feet wide° High tides and storms, etc. have moved the rocks in the last 40 feet so that it averages approximately 20 feet wide~ The rocks just sit on top of the sand, and there is insufficient height to prevent the sand from shoaling the creek at high tide. Ail we're looking to do is to rearrange the rocks in the last 40 feet so that the entire jetty will be approximately 10 feet wide° By increasing the height of.the last 40 feet to what it was originally we hope to slow down the movement of sand into the creek. Very truly yours, Arthur L. Smith, Jr. Box 214 New Canaan, CT 06840 Enclosures August 25, t786 Mr. Henry P. Smith, President Town Trustees To,...m of Southold Southold, N.Y. 1t.~7i Dear Nr. Smith, i am a resident of Edgemere Park, a small community of ten homes on the eastern side of Brush's Creek, Laurel, N.Y. A number of years ago our community association rebuilt a rock jetty that parallels the eastern side of Brush's Creek in order to prevent sand from shoaling the creek. T~is was done after securing al necessary governmental permits. Throughout the years, however, high tides and storms have moved many of the rocks so that the jetty has lost its height. Several weeks ago the community consulted with Mr. Ray Dean, who has given me permission to use his name, as to the requirements of securing a permit to re-pile the rocks that have been displaced over the years. We are not talking about adding new rocks - only rearranging the ones that are already there. Mr. Dean suggested that, in his opinion, a permit would not be necessary as tong as new rocks were not being added. He also suggested, however, that ! write to you and seek your concurrence. In addition, if you agree with Mr. Dean, t would appreciate your opinion as to whether our project may proceed without notifying the Department of Environmental Conservation. Vet× truly yours, Arthur L. Smith Jr. Box 4?4 Laurel, N.Y. ti748
