INSTRUCTIONS
a. This application must be completely filled in by typewriter or in ink and submitted in duplicate to the
Building Inspector.
b. Plot plan showing location of lot and of buildings on premises, relationship to'.adjoining premises or public
streets or areas, and giving a detailed description of layout of property must be drawn on the diagram which is
part of this application.
c. The work covered by this application may not be commenced before issuance of Building Permit.
d. Upon approval of this application, the Building Inspector will issue a Building Permit to the applicant.
Such permit shall be,kept on the premises available for inspection throughout the progress of the work.
e. No building shall be occupied or used in whole or in part for any purpose whatever until a Certificate of
Occupancy shall have been granted by the Building Inspector.
APPLICATION IS HEREBY MADE to the Building D epartment for the issuance of a Building Permit pursuant
to the Building Zone Ordinance of the Town of Southo Id, Suffolk County, New York, and other applicable Laws,
Ordinances or Regulations, for the construction of buildings, additions or alterations, or for removal or demo-

on the south side of County Road # 27 further west than
the original proposed location?

that you can get a more suitable spot: for the sign.

The members of this Association are unequivocally opposed
to the application of Donald Smith, North Sea Drive and Kenney's Road,
for a special exception to the Zoning Ordinance to permit the erection
of an off premise directional sign on land of C.W. Booth on the south
side of Middle Road.
The Association feels that the ordinance, which limits
the erection of signs, is both sound and desirable. We further feel
that the continued granting of exceptions will eventually destroy the
New England atmosphere of Southold and in time our Main and Middle
Roads will resemble the approaches to Miami and Montauk.
The Association further feels that the granting of a special
exception in this case is particularly unwarranted since the premise
in question is scarcely a straight half mile from the point of the
proposed off premise directional sign. As most people know,
Kenney's Road is not difficult to find and that once on Kenney's Road
one cannot help but arrive at North Sea Drive. There are no intricate
turns involved and the premise could hardly be considered "off the
beaten path". Furthermore, the existence and location of the premise
is regularly advertised in our local newspaper. We feel certain that
those interested in patronizing Mr. Smith's establishment have had
no difficulty locating it.
The Association strongly urges that the Board deny the
request of the applicant.

Letter subnitted in opposition to the application of Donald L. Smith,
North Sea Ill:'ive & Kenney's Rd., Southold, New York for the granting of an
off: premises directional sign on the land of C. W. Booth on the south side
of Middle Road, (also known as County Rd. 27.)
Gentlemens
I am strongly opposed to the granting of a permit for the erection of an
off premises directional sign on the land of C. W.Booth by the applicant
Donald L. Smith for the follOwing reasonss
1. The Town of Southold is gifted with a natural scenic beauty. The
newly improved County Road 27 has vastly improved the landscape in the area.
We should not mar this wonderful scenery in the Town of Southold by allowing
the erection of off the premises business signs along our scenic highways.
2. Road signs and/or billboards have been proven a road hazard. They
tend to distract motorists who should be concentrating on their driving.
3. The proposed location of this sign involves two (2) road in~rsections.
This can result in the possibility of the following hazards.
Kenney's Road to the North for one. A Motorist traveling East oJi the
Middle Road distracted by the proposed sign may decide to make a sudden left
turn into Kenney's Road. Deceleration prior to such a turn without sufficient
warning to follOwing motorists could result in a severe accicent. Remember the
speed limit on the Middle Road is 50 Miles per hour. Motorists reaction time
at that speed doesn't allow for any margin for evasive action. The same
motorist realizing the possibility of a ~ar end collision to himself might
decide to make the left turn even though it might involve cutting off a
motorist proceding West on the Middle Road.

Tuckers Lane is a second hazard, A motorist traveling East on the Middle
Road and unfamiliar with the area will be distracted by the proposed sign
at the side of the road. Remember he is traveling at 50 M.P.H. He will not
have sufficient time to realize as he approaches Tuckers Lane, that an
intersecting road exists at that location. As you all know Tuckers Lane
is not very visible while proceding East on the Middle Road,.
In a recent statement, Police Chief Cataldo was appalled and very concerned
about the rising rate of vehicular accidents within the area of the
Town of Southold. I believe that we should make every effort to assist our

statistics bear out that roadside advertising signs are a major contributing
factor.
4. The Building Zone Ordinance of the Town of Southold is very
specific in stating that signs in a "B" Business district shall only advertise
the business conducted on the premises.
In light of the above factors, I respectfully urge the Zoning Board
of Appeals of the Town of Southold to disapprove the request for the
directional sign applied for by Donald L. Smith, doing business as the
Edgewater Inn. Such an action would be in the best interests of the
citizens of the Town of Southold, for the reasons of safety, and the
preservation of the beauty of the town.
