By the end of July, the total is ex- pected to reach 98. The coordinator of this am- bitious program is Marian Radic, who attended the New York Boat Show last year and fell in love with a Chris- Craft 34- foot houseboat, called the Aqua Home. He then stunned the company's officials by ordering 100 of them. · But Radic wasn't crazy. He saw an immediate solution to Yugoslavia's problem of not having enough hotels to keep up with the growing tourist trade. The transaction was more than ideal for Chris-Craft, too. With a factory at Fiumi- tine, Italy, outside Rome, it overland to the Adriatic side of Italy and then across the sea to Yugoslavia, only 58 miles away. Chris-Craft's trade name for a floating hotel of Aqua ttomes, a good part of the Adriatic. fleets will include the 31-foot Commander. All of the boats will be based at three ports, Portoroz, Rovinj and Dubrov- nik, spanning 450 miles of the coast. What makes this section of Yugoslavia so pleasant to cruise, according to Radic, is a string of islands that provides protected waters and never allows a boat eat out of sight of land. In addi- tion, fuel, supplies and boat- ing services are available nearly everywhere so that vm~ can pick up a boat at ~ne place and leave it at an- other. Radio said that an Ameri- can family could vacation aboard a houseboat for 4,000 dinars a week, which comes to about $500. "With over- seas hotel and restaurant costs rising constantly," he added, "the Aquatel Idea can well as an unusual form of travel." It is only the beginning, cording to Chris-Craft. The world's largest boat company expects France, Greece, Italy, lhe Netherlands, Israel and Liberia to follow in Yugo- sla~ia's wake soon. "SWISS AMERICAN BUSINESS"-- February 1970 provided with in-depth cost analyses on airline routes, executive travel, air taxi services and agricultural aircraft operation. Input data compiled on the basis of the client's particular opera- tion is fed directly into an on-line com- puter. The data would include, for example, estimated hours in use per year, net investment cost, estimated operating costs per hour, annual fixed expenses and the like. The computer will then print out total operating costs per hour. Up to now, information of this kind involved long and tedious paperwork and there was no guarantee that the estimates were accurate. One of the more spectacular aspects of the computer system is in route seg- ment or air taxi analysis. In such cases, the computer takes over com- pletely and "flies" the particular air- craft model proposed, simulating situ- ations or environments and indicating performance figures, load and econom- ic information for both existing and projected operations. SWISS SUCCESSES IN NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY Three of the major Swiss firms en- gaged in the nuclear sector have scored major triumphs recently. Sulzer Broth- ers of Winterthur have secured a con- tract to supply reactor pumps for the Borssele Nuclear Power Station near Vlissingen in Holland and a further contract from Canada for the supply of a heavy water preparation column. Motor Columbus of Baden have been called in on a major consultant assign- ment in connection with "Atucha", a nuclear power station some 70 miles to the northwest of Buenos Aires, the first of its kind in Latin America. Brown Boveri, also in Baden, have tendered an offer for the first nuclear power station to be built in Austria. Brown Boveri have formed a consor- tium with Westinghouse to collaborate on this project. One of the most strik- ing features about BBC is that the company is the only turbine manufac- turer in the world to play an important role in reactor construction without having a reactor to call its own. CHRIS CRAFT AQUATEL PRO~IECT ON SCHEDULE Plans for a $51/2 million "Aquatel" floating hotel chain were announced by Chris Craft of Lausanne as far back as September 9, 1969. Originally, plans were made to establish a series of three houseboat hotels along the Adriatic Coast in Yugoslavia. Since the original announcement was made, Chris Craft has extended the project to five aquatels -- at Portoroz, Rovinj, Punat, Zadar and Dubrovnik. This floating hotel chain will cover 381 miles of the Adriatic coastline and will increase Yugoslavia's tourist amenities by 1000 beds in 1970. The first aquatel to open will be at Dubrovnik and reports from pleasure boat manufacturer and promoter of the Aquatel Project Chris Craft indicate that it is already booked to 50% capacity for the opening date of May 1. The project is ambitious and attractive. An "Aquatel" comprises a fleet of Chris Craft houseboats grouped round a central marina which will contain clubhouse, restaurant, rest area, play- ground, shops and laundry facilities. The houseboats themselves are rented as mobile hotel suites which cost in the region of $80 a day. The 34-foot Chris Craft aqua-home sleeps eleven -- preferably close friends. Three sleep in the forward cabin and up to six in a private aft cabin. The other two bunks are supplied by a convert- ible central wardrobe arrangement. Toilet, showers and a fully-equipped galley are on board. Ideally, the houseboat is best suited for two fami- lies. Houseboats have been in existence since the overloaded Ark but it is only recently that the idea has caught on. Design and performance have been consistently improved over the years and the Chris Craft houseboat is a far cry from the one that was instrumental in bringing Sophia Loran and Cary Grant together in the film of the same name. The 46-foot fibreglass Aqua- Home provides generous aecomoda- tion in the form of two-level, 31' x 11' 31 YUGOSLAVIA DIJBnOVNIK indoor living area with 6'6" headroom plus an outdoor area fur lounging, eating and entertaining. Pilot house, L-shaped dinette and fully-equipped electric galley are on the upper level. Below, private guest and master state- rooms are located amidships and aft. Herbert L. Pocklington, President of Chris Craft S.A., Lausanne, pointed out that, instead of flying or driving to resort areas, checking in at a hotel and renting a boat for cruising pur- poses, "with the houseboat guests can go for a cruise, water ski, skin dive or fish in complete privacy from their own hotel suite. The big advantage is, of course, mobility. If you get tired of the view (or of the neighbours) all you have to do is cast off." In Yugoslavia, guests will be able to "check in" at one location and cruise down the coast at their leisure to the other Aquatels in the chain. Chris Craft announce that 120 house- boats will be in operation by July and that capacity will be doubled by 1971. The project is the first of its kind in the world although similar plans are cur- rently being developed in Spain, Mexico and the Bahamas. e Above left: Aquatel sites along Yugoslavia's coastline.
