Southold Town Hall Conference Room A meeting of the Deer Management Task Force Committee was held Wednesday, August 31, 2021 at the Town Hall Meeting Hall Room, Main Road, Southold. Present were: Members: Craig Jobes, Councilperson Sarah Nappa, Dave Dominy, Adam West, John Rasweiler, John Wittenburg, John Haas, Jeff Standish and Nancy Foote Call to order: Meeting was called to order by Chairperson Craig Jobes at 6:30 PM. Minutes from January 20, 2021 meeting were approved. Review of 2020 season: statistics were read. Harvest 415 (increase by 20), 169 of these deer were harvested on Town properties. 240 of the totals were donated, 188 Oakdale, 60 to individuals (this number is down due to Covid). Town properties are being underutilized. No one is really hunting them. Most does are harvested in October. Promote the Town properties to the hunters revealing that there are plenty of deer to hunt in these areas. Ideas included use of small parcels for buck territory and adding more zones on properties. DEC changes: Antlerless only deer season this year added from September 11 to September 19. Regular season will begin October 1. Oakdale process facility will not be open for this early season. 2021/22 Season: No new properties are planned to be added to the program. Hummel Pond will be closed to hiking during the hunting season. There are no hunter suspensions that need to be discussed at this time. The grant for butchering and facility facelift that Craig has worked on has been extended. Some money used to help out reimburse Oakdale facility for their butchering effort? Craig will reach out to Danny at Oakdale to discuss further. Jeff suggested use of food plots instead of bait. Possibly being able to use grant money for food plots, they dont have to be large in size. John R questioned whether funding can be obtained from DEC. Use of young forest initiatives are better management for forest plan. Use of forage plots also promotes other wildlife. Craig will look into State money. Plots that were created years by the Town for deer harvest but now they are overgrown. Covid: The Town requires the wearing of masks in all buildings. Hunter will be asked to wear masks at the cooler as well. John Rasweiler reported studies are being done at Cornell on transmission of Covid among deer themselves and other animals. . The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM. Future meeting has not been scheduled at this time. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Foote Deer Management Task Force Committee Secretary 1
