These include: 1) Reduction of commercial waste, particularly in the first 3 quarters of the year which saw 20% less of this stream than in 2019. 2) Increase in residential waste of 15%, likely the result of seasonal residents coming to the Town earlier and staying longer than normal. The Town's PAYT system enabled the Town to absorb the increased cost of disposal of this stream with no adverse impact. The residential recycling streams saw a similar increase, especially so with regard to glass bottles. 3) To limit physical interaction between staff and public at the Station's vehicle scales, residential brush was accepted free of charge for most of the year resulting in a 35% increase in tonnage received in 2020. Maintenance issues with the facility's wood waste grinder in the last quarter of the year interrupted processing of the waste causing a larger than normal backlog of material to accumulate. 4) To avoid residents congregating in groups at the facility, the Town closed its "Re-Use" facility - where useable items can be exchanged free of charge and which has become a magnet for weekend 'bargain seekers' — at the start of the pandemic. Local privately run exchanges and donation centers have also been closed. This has resulted in a noticeable increase in items such as furniture, toys, dishes, decorations, and other useful household items entering the waste stream. The facility is still closed and will remain so until the pandemic subsides. The Town estimated that the ReUse facility diverted at least 100 tons of such items from the waste stream in 2019. 5) As a busy "self-hauler" facility (approx.. 45% of the Town's residents choose to bring their waste and recyclables to the transfer station themselves rather than hire a private carter), the Town was challenged throughout the year to manage a significant increase in daily traffic not only from full-time residents but visitors and guests who frequently sought information and assistance from staff on facility policies and operations, while maintaining proper COVID protocols.
