This Regular Meeting of the Southold Town Tree Committee was called to order at 7:05 PM—this
was an in person meeting and also held via the Zoom platform. There was no meeting held in July
2021.
Discussion Items: ,.
Jay suggested that we map out all the trees which have been planted within the last five (5) years
so that when we go out and pull stakes as well as prune and install the deer guard,we are prepared.
Discussion was held with respect to the request of Erin Bednoski for our help to come up with part
of the money required to plant a Memorial Tree&plaque in memory of Amber Stulsky at Southold
school. The Committee will help with the cost for the plaque and tree. We will get started on
having a plaque made up.
Peter Burr's intent to retire from the Committee as our Fisher Island representative was discussed.
Mr. Burr has recommended Curtis Rand (Fishers Island) to the Committee. Mr. Rand attended
this evening's meeting via the Zoom platform. The committee present at the meeting introduced
themselves to Mr. Rand and gave him an overview of what the Tree Committee is all about. We
will make a formal request to the Town Board upon the receipt of both Mr. Burr's formal
resignation and Mr. Rand's intent to be nominated.
Jay discussed with Heather Lanza her concern for the dying Ash trees at Yennecott. It will be
recommended to Highway Department to take down the diseased trees and then we will put that
area on our Fall Planting list.
Gerard will be advised to speak to the Accounting Department to ascertain what remains in our
Budget so,that we can better judge for new trees/maintenance.
Dave Cichanowicz asked Mr. Rand on behalf of Fisher's Island if he would get a feel for how
many trees would need to get planted there this Fall. Mr. Rand agreed that he would touch base
with Peter Burr and then get back to us.
It has now been decided that with respect to the replanting of trees in the middle of the Town—
that it will be best to contact Highway Dept. who will saw cut the sidewalk so that trees can be
planted next to the existing stumps. It is still being discussed which trees will be the, best for that
particular spot.
Peg—although not present at the meeting-would like the-teachers to know about Arbor Day soon
so that they can plan for same in their_schedules. We w_ill start by sending the preliminary letters
out to all schools.
We will next meet on September 22, 2021-Via ZoomKPlatform&in Person.
