REGULAR MEETING
June 23, 2021 HELD VIA ZOOM/AND IN PERSON
7:00 PM
Present: Gerard Orientale, Jay Jansen, Peter Burr (via Zoom), Peg Murphy, Dave Cichanowicz
This Regular Meeting of the Southold Town Tree Committee was called to order at 7:00 PM —
this was an in person meeting and also held via the Zoom platform.
Discussion Items:
Tree "ode: Gerard spoke to Assistant Town Attorney, Damon Hagan after members had met
privately to discuss and review the draft of the Tree Code that Damon Hagan had prepared. One
of the Code's major objectives is to address the clear cutting of building lots in an effort to not
destroy the natural beauty of properties. Members had questions/concerns after reviewing the
proposed Code, some of which were: whose responsibility it would be to enforce the Code, the
fines and how the Code would get advertised to alert the public when it is hopefully passed. Mr.
Hagan satisfied the questions of the Committee, will make the necessary changes and will now
present the refined Code to the Town Board where it will be open for public discussion before it
gets voted on by the Board.
' of R& Parad.e: Gerard had spoken to Carol Scott about the particulars of this year's parade.
Carol wanted an emphasis on "red„ white & lLie". The Corninittee made arrangements where
and when to meet the morning of the parade which starts at noon. .,,1 V , '
Burlap Removal/Tree ree Covers: Many of the trees that were planted still require the burlap to be
removed and the tree covers to be put on. The Committee recognizes that there are far too many
trees which require attention for them to handle doing themselves. They decided that Jay will
make a map of such trees and we will contract someone to do the work.
Mrs. Goldsmith: Gerard had spoken to Mrs. Goldsmith who questioned about planting a tree
down at the beach at Founders Landing. Committee discussed that this is actually a question for
the Southold Park District and will so advise Mrs. Goldsmith.
Town/Villac M"I:ees: Gerard spoke to Vinny Orlando about the four locations. Vinny will not
grind the stumps but has agreed that the Highway Dept. will replace the sidewalk panels where
trees are if we grind them and then we can put a new tree in its place. Discussion was had about
replacing with a 2 '/2"to 3" caliper high branch cherry hopefully in October.
Fall Planting We will start a list for our Fall Planting schedule. Peter Burr was asked to also
make a location list for new trees and map them so that we can plan for Fishers Island. Dave
suggested that he and Gerard maybe attend the Town Board Fishers Island meeting in August
and meet up with Peter Burr to view trees on the Island. The Fishers Island Board meeting is
scheduled for Wednesday, August 4, 2021. Jill has advised us that the Town Board is not
actually sure yet that they will go to Fishers Island this year and will keep us advised.
We will next meet on July 21, 2021 —Via Zoom Platform & in Person.
This meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Diane DiSalvo
