I'm sorry for the confusion as my wife, Lisa, and I have been under the impression that we need a revised permit in order to begin the catwalk building process. On 02/04/19, 1 did meet with the board at the property. Very nice guys. I came away from that meeting with the understanding that the board was to convene, discuss the matter and most likely issue me an amended permit to include the thru-flow decking. We have not received any correspondence from the Town with regards to the outcome of that meeting. On 05/15/2019, we met with Mr. Hagen prior to our court appearance and made it clear that that we're prepared to be fully compliant as soon as possible. Mr. Hagen advised the presiding Judge that we are expecting an amended permit from the Trustees and ready move forward with building the catwalk. He then directed us back to your office. On 06/20/2019 we did stop into the office to inquire about the amendment. We had tried several other times and found it closed (on one of those occasions we poked our heads into Mr. Hagan's office to let him know we're on it). The representative assisting us could not find any indication that a field inspection had ever been done and advised that the Trustees do not just issue amendments and that we need to apply for one. We immediately completed and sent that application. Perhaps we don't even need thisamend ment. We are in contact with the DEC and have planned to meet with them within the week of July 81h. If they require any update or amendment to the permit I will be in touch. Thank you! Respectfully, rouglasCarlen Cc. Upon review of your file this office requires you comply with the terms of Permit#6064 issued on January 19, 2005 for a 3'x16' catwalk with an attached 4'x8' platform in a "T" configuration as depicted on the plan prepared by Douglas Carlen dated March 7, 2005. Similarly, on May 15, 2019 Assistant Town Attorney Damon Hagan informed you of the need to comply with the terms of Permit#6064 regarding the August 20, 2018 code violations at the same site. Additionally you met on February 4, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. with the entire Board of Trustees at the above referenced property, read and signed the field notes which state: "Not enough water depth for a float. Fixed catwak with thru-flow decking is more appropriate." Please contact the Town Attorney's office if you require additional guidance on this matter. Sincerely, Michael J. Since the construction of the existing deck,we have had a tent over it that we put up in the spring and take down in the fall. The aluminum tent frame has since become weak due to exposure to the elements and I have constructed a new one of wood. The new frame is designed to be assembled in the spring and disassembled in the fall but I received a violation for putting it up without a permit. I would, therefore, like to apply for a permanent roof that can left up year around. Please see the framing diagrams included for the details. In addition, I have deck sections with a small plastic shed on top. These items were at a campsite at our family farm upstate. But,when my parents sold the farm last summer, I brought them down and put at this location. Again, they are designed to be put up in the spring, taken down in the fall and stacked on top of the existing deck for the winter. This too, I would like to make permanent if the Trustees will allow it. We have taken care to preserve the foliage along the water and it has come in quite nicely since removing the debris, vines and weeds from the premises. My wife, Lisa, and I have had very pleasant dealings with your office in the past. Consideration of this application is appreciated and the final decision of the Trustees is respected. Souti~ol~J 10wn Board of Trustees 11/03/04 To: Town of Southold Board of Trustees From: Douglas and Lisa Carlen 7 Laurel Hollow Wading River, NY 11792 Reft 5550 New Suffolk Ave. Mattituck, NY 11952 $outholfl n[own Board 0l ~frustee~ Dear Trustees; Enclosed are applications required for work I performed at the described location. In addition, we would like to pursue the possibility of rebuilding the existing wooden retaining wall as well as constructing a small pier and/or dock on the property. Prior to entering into contract on this property in October '03, I called the building dept. to discuss what procedures were required to clean up the location and resurrect the pre- existing structures. I explained that there were the remains of an old cabin and retaining wall. The cabin floor was complete but the walls and roof had collapsed years ago. I came away from the discussion with the understanding that the floor could be rebuilt, because it currently exists, but the cabin could not be rebuilt, as it was no longer standing. I was advised that the cabin and retaining wall would require prior trustee approval. We have no request for the cabin and our intention was to pursue the retaining wall and the possibility of a dock or pier in the Spring of '05. When we purchased the property in December of '03 it was completely over nm with t~ash and brush and, obviously, had been used as a dumpsite for many years. Garbage had promoted the growth of briar bushes and vines which choked the vegetation. A number of trees had been killed. We first cleared the debris including building materials, furniture, appliances, metal drams and numerous other unwanted items. The cabin floor was not safe. We had planned to use it as a picnic table platform and, after cleaning up the debris, I rebuilt it. This was a small project that took less that a day to complete. We recently received notification that the platform is in violation. We have always taken pride in being good neighbors and have every intention of the doing the right thing politically and, particularly, environmentally. The trees have already begun to flourish. They are, however, vulnerable to erosion. We would like to replace, at least part of, the wooden retaining wall in order to protect the property from further erosion. We are open to any and all suggestions on other methods available to accomplish this. At some point we would like to build a small pier and/or dock which could be used to fish from or launch a rowboat. I don't know if all of these concerns can be addressed with this application or if each should be submitted separately. Other than the erosion, which is very slow, we are under no time constraint. We have three daughters and our intentions for this property are simply to use as a picnic and bird watching area. Many neighbors walk and ride bicycles on New Suffolk Ave. and we welcome them to visit the property and enjoy all that Deep Hole Creek has to offer. Thank you!
