Jericho Turnpike Huntington, L.I., New York HA 3-7665 PRIVATE DETAIL SPECIFICATIONS A:-1 STRUCTURAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR "GUNITE" CONCRETe: DE FINITION: "Gunite" is an outstanding building m~terial that lends itself to sound engineering principles and a~chitectural form with infinite versatility. Gunite is ideally adaptable to all swinSming pool contours, lending freedorn of design and resulting in natural beauty. Gunite is an extremely strong, dense,i highly resistant mixture of sand, cement and water applied pn~umatica!ly through a "gun". It is known in the construction trade qb Gunite, Shotcrete or Pneumatically Projected Concrete. The premixed sand and cement in a dry state moves through ~ "material hose" under pressure to the nozzle. Another hosel carries the water at a higher pressure to the nozzle slmulta~eously. The water is fed through a ring into the dry materi~l stream as it enters the nozzle, where hydration of the cen%ent starts. The sand and cement, mixed only with enough water to prope~rly place it, continues through the nozzle to the place of deposit. While maximum efficiency in application of concrete is achieved through the rapidity and expert experience of Paddock-Welding Swimming Pool Corporation's advanced construction techniques, equally high efficiency is also achieve.~ through the natural inherent qualities of Gunite itself. Here are s,~rne of the specific features of Gunite. STRENGTH: Low water ratio is required. Ordinary structural concrete averages from 2, 500 lbs. p.s.i, to 3,500 lbs. ~.s.i. - Gunite will average 4, 000 lbs. p.s.i, to 7, 000 lbs. p. Sol. A-1 PADDOCK-WELDING SWIMMING POOL CORPORATION HIGHI,Y RESISTANT TO WEATHERING AN~ FROST: Due to extremely high density and l~w permeability the percentage of voids in Gunite concrete is less t~han fifty percent of ordinary concrete. Destructive agents such ~s the freezing and thawing action of water, both fresh and salt~ is greatly reduced. Disintegra- tion is virtually eliminated, i GREATER DENSITY AND LESS SHRINKAGE~ Due to a minimum of excess water, ihlgh speed application and automatic rejection of particles of t~e mixture which do not find suitable bond with cement coated pa~ticleso LOW ABSORPTION: Laboratory tests clearly show the a~sorption of Gunite Concrete This low absorption rate makes it ideal for to be less than 5%. structures subject to acid, water a~d alkali &track. EXPANSION: In construction Paddock-Welding's wimming pool gunite concrete has a coefficient of expansion almost the same as the steel reinforcing bars, thereby eliminating the necesi~ity for Mxpansion joints. ELASTICITY: 4,000,000 pounds per square inch. WATER - PROOFNESS: Due to low water ratio, gunite concrete is more impermeable ordinary concrete. Paddock-Welding Swimming Pool C}rporatio,n gunite concrel:e ha~ all the above properties because ~h~iplacement under pressure against a surface, results in the natural re~ction of all excess materials, which in turn is responsible for its ~reater natural strength. WORK INCLUDED: This work shall include all labor, r~aterial and equipment to complete in accordance with the pla~s all concrete and gumte work, reinforced or otherwise, all Sabot and equipment for making excavations or backfill required for such construction, all labor, material and equipment required fo! the construction and removal of forms, all labor, material and e, uipment for other work as specified in contract. Water pressure at the ~un nozzle shall be maintained at not less than 15 lbs. greater than th~ air pressure at the gun. The structural gunite shall be applied ~gainst original undisturbed soil or thoroughly compacted earth andl forms that will not yield during the application of the gunite. Where gunite is applied against existing concrete, the concrete surface~ shall be thoroughly cleaned and drenched with water at least twice !on the day before placing the gunite. Surfaces upon which gunite is ~o be applied shall be sufficiently damp to prevent excessive absorption df. water content in the gunite mix, but not so wet as to overcome suction. Gunite deposited on vertical surfaces s~all be shot at a right angle to the surface, starting at the bottom and~Icontinuing upward. It shall be built up in layers of a thickness thatlwill not slump, allowing sufficient time between the placing of l~yers for initial set to take place.
