Dear Town Board of Southold, New York,
We need affordable housing!
I love the North Fork. I was raised here. My parents live here and it was always my dream to live here.
Unfortunately, rising real estate prices have left me without that as an option. I've been lucky enough to spend
time here when I visit my family and friends, and I love the time I am spending here during Covid.
Unfortunately, with each returning trip I have discovered a war on lower income families.
My friends volunteer in your fire department. My family serves drinks at your restaurants, and helps at your
hospitals. Southold has been held up on the backs of the working class for generations, and now you're making
it impossible for them to live out here.
The lottery to help people find housing was such a wonderful thing. My one friend (a single mother) won a slot,
only to lose it when you repulled. It was heartbreaking, but I understand how little housing is available. As I've
said, I am in the same boat.
Normally I am not politically active, but when I heard that you are going to block additional affordable housing
when a single mother is scrambling left me horrified. This is not the town I grew up in. A few whiny residents
complaining about their property value when good people are suffering is really disturbing.
1
It was my dream to return someday with my own children, but even if I can afford it, it appears it might be
changing so irreparably that I might not wish to return.
Please consider making the Depot Lane Project a thing. My friends need it. My family needs it. This community
needs it.
Sincerest Regards,
Jarret Palmer

Hello Town Clerk and anybody else who may be reading this. I am writing to you in support of the affordable apartments
proposal on Depot Lane. I was born and raised in Cuthogue, graduated Mattituck High School in 2003, and own a house
in Mattituck that I live in full time. Having been in the area for over 30 years, I know the area extremely well. The North
Fork is in desperate need of affordable housing. Finding 12 month leases on rental apartments or houses has always
been difficult to find. In recent years with seasonal rentals and the AIRBNB explosion, finding affordable year long rentals
has become harder than ever. I know this to be true because I have several friends and family members who make their
living off of North Fork real estate sales and rentals.
I disagree with the idea that these apartments will increase traffic so much that it will create a dangerous situation. The
road is as straight as an arrow and marked with a double yellow line. I had my Communion and Confirmation at Our Lady
Of Ostrabrama church, right down the street from 2050 Depot Lane. Depot Lane is not what I would consider a very
residential area. It has farms, a church, and a restaurant. It is actually the perfect road to accommodate a moderately
sized apartment building because of it's size and visibility. Being in-between the Main Road and Route 48 is exactly where
an apartment building like this should be. It is away from the large residential areas, so decreasing nearby property value
will not be an issue. I don't think anyone would prefer to live close to an apartment building if they had the choice, so this
is enough out of the way that it would not be in anybody's backyard.
The North Fork badly needs affordable housing. It's a beautiful area and unavoidable that many homes out here are 2nd
homes for some people. I love the idea that these apartments would prioritize health care workers, first responders, and
local residents. Our amazing town will cease to function if our local, year round residents don't have a place to live. It is
becoming more and more expensive to live out here. Our locals getting out of high school and college and just starting
their young adult life are too often forced to live elsewhere because they can not afford their home town. That should not
happen to anybody.
These apartments will help keep Southold Town as gorgeous and as charming as it is. If the lower middle class has
nowhere to live, then our farms, vineyards, restaurants, and grocery stores will severely struggle to staff their
1
employees. I can't think of one reason why this shouldn't happen. It's the perfect area and our town needs it. Please let
these apartments be built before it's too late!
