The proposed structure consists of four parallel, permanently fixed, aluminum frames installed perpendicular to the building. The frames will be fixed to the building at one end and supported by frost footings at the other. Motorized, retractable fabric panels will span between the frames. In a typical installation, the fabric panels are deployed or retracted by manually activating a remote- control switch. The fabric panels are intended to be extended, weather permitting, during the hours of restaurant operation between mid-May and mid-September.Similar to a cafe style table umbrella, the fabric panels will be retracted when the establishment is not open and during inclement weather. The frame is designed to withstand all code required lateral and live loads as per IBC Section 3105. The fabric covered canopy fully deployed, will not meet the 20 psf snow load IBC requirement although it is not intended to be used in the off-season when snow might be likely. The fabric covered canopy, when deployed, is not capable of withstanding hurricane-force, 120 mile per hour wind load as required by the IBC for a canopy in this coastal location. Strict compliance with IBC Section 3105, Awnings and Canopies, would entail practical difficulties, unnecessary hardship or would otherwise be unwarranted because such would be unnecessary in light of alternatives which, without a loss in the level of safety, achieve the intended objective of the code. www.ecsarchitects.com Proposed alternate method of code compliance: We propose to install a wind sensor that will automatically retract the fabric panels when wind speed is sensed at 30-mph which is below the 120-mph code requirement for maximum wind loading. The sensor requires no human intervention and will be installed in an unobstructed location so as to initiate retraction immediately upon sensing a 30-mph gust. Exhibit D includes manufactures specifications for the aluminum canopy frame, retractable fabric component and wind sensor.
