Russell Town Supervisor , 53095 Main Road PO Box 1179 Southold, NY 11971 S01A8 @LD Dear Supervisor Russell: New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) professionals have completed an investigation into your constituents' request for "Turtle Crossing" signs on NYS Route 25 in Cutchogue and Mattituck, New York. My staff and I admire the civic mindedness and concern for the welfare of our wildlife demonstrated by the students of the Peconic Community School in Aquebogue, New York. By law, NYSDOT professionals must adhere to the guidelines established in the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the New York State Supplement. These publications facilitate a uniform system of traffic control devices and contain specific requirements for the posting of signs. Unfortunately, there are no provisions in these two manuals for the posting of signs for smaller wildlife; therefore, NYSDOT is unable to accommodate the Peconic Community School student's request to install "Turtle Crossing" signs. Thank you for taking an interest in this important issue. You or your staff are welcome to call me or Meg Danielson, Director of External and Government Relations at (631) 952-6632 should you have any questions. Sincerely, Richard B. Causin, P.E.
