Minutes
Meeting called to order 10:05am
Present: Valerie Shelby (Co-chair), Susan Dingle, Jean LePre, Eleanor Lingo, Christopher North,
Emily Geiger, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Leroy J. Heyliger, David Schultz, Carolyn Peabody
Cindy Smith, Bill Ruland (Deputy Town Supervisor and Liaison to ABTF) and Sonia Spar
(Co-chair)
Excused: Marjorie Day
1. Christopher North made a motion to approve the minutes, with changes, and it passed
unanimously.
2. Helen Prince Community Award
Peconic Landing has been secured for October 2020
Meaningful event with participation of all the schools with artwork
3. MLK Event 2020
a. Speaker: Rev Donald Butler, Southampton Community Baptist Church
b. Choir: Will be coming from the same church
c. Location: North Fork United Methodist Church
d. Date: January 19, 2020 at 4:00pm
4. Follow up on Letter to Southold Town Board members and Supervisor related to
affordable housing.
a. Letter was presented to all ABTF members and
b. Unanimously approved that three members present the letter and discuss it
further at next Board meeting.
c. Discussion dealt with implicit bias and a culture that may not be welcoming. Our
mission is about responding to bias and promoting inclusion and making sure
efforts that affect representation and equal opportunities receive the attention
of ABTF. Some institutions at Southold Town may not be representative of
everybody and preferential treatment may have the unintended consequence of
disparate impact.
5. It was agreed that all ABTF members will begin to ask the community for candidate
nominations to receive ABTF scholarship and for the Helen Prince Community Award.
Motion approved to create application and process will start with the collaboration
between Sonia, Susan and David.

6. Support to Greenport Library and their program to educate on what is bias and hate
incidents/crimes.
7. Communication
a. Work on the SABTF Brochure
b. Uploading scholarship form in Town’s Website
8. Deputy Town Supervisor, Bill Ruland, spoke about event commemorating the legacy of
Merle Levine and the important work of the Anti-Bias Task Force.
9. MLK -Follow-up needed to identify book/DVD etc. for Frank LePre Memorial Donation
10. Motion to adjourn was approved with all in favor at 11:40am
