Economic Development Committee Meeting March 20, 2019
Town Hall Annex Board Room
In Attendance: Jennifer Del Vaglio, Denis Noncarrow, Rona Smith, Sara Garretson, Donielle Cardinale,
Bill Ruland, Brent Robertson, Leslie Merinoff, and John Stype
Guests: Ron Breuer and Greg Doroski
SCORE – GUEST SPEAKER – update on SCORE
o Most traffic for SCORE is through libraries and appointments are set-up primarily through the
internet
o Provide support for small businesses
o Stationed out of Hauppauge
o Mentors are all volunteers, once a week, about 45 members, 80 clients on the North and South
Fork
o Mentors are certified and go through an on-line training program
o They connect with SEP unemployment
o Great success rate – 70% of people that are mentored create new business.
o A trend of part-time employment/supplemental income
o SCORE offers classes through You Tube
o Can help non-for-profit
BUSINESS SEMINAR – Start-up Business 101 - March 18th
o 13 people attended
o Diverse ideas for new business
GRANT TASK -
o What would the grant application process would look like
o Peconic Land Trust as an example
o What grants are available for 2019
o How the grant will help the recipient and town
o What is the criteria to be awarded the grant
o Topic of conflict of interest was discussed – if you know someone eligible for the grant
your one would remove his/herself from the vote
o Partner with Suffolk County
MISCELLANEOUS –
o Town Board is sending out a new plan
o Changed meeting date and time to Mondays at 4pm
o Requesting town to provide a secretary for the Economic Development Committee
ACTION ITEMS:
Create database from seminars – send email to gain feedback
Proposal for SCORE mixer
Connect with Chambers on how they publicize to their members
Have a conversation with Cara to find out if our Grant idea would align with their program
