Dear Mr. and Mrs. Leitch:
In response to your letter received on August 30, 2019, the Board of Trustees reviewed
your request to cut down the Honey Locust tree at the rear of the house located on the
above mentioned property, which tree was seen by Trustee Michael J. Domino on
September 3, 2019.
The Board of Trustees determined that this tree may be removed at this time. No
permit will be required in order to remove this tree.
Any other activity within 100' of the wetland boundary requires a permit from this office.
This is not a determination from any other agency.
If you have any questions, please call our office at (631) 765-1892.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Domino

To Whom it May Concern, Southold Town Trustees
I am about to start a large construction project on my home at 1950 Clearview Ave. in
Southold. I currently have a large Honey Locust tree at the rear of the house. I was working
with a consulting arborist to preserve said tree through the entire project. His name is Matthew
Daly. His original thoughts were that the tree may suffer damage through the construction
project but that it was a tree worth trying to save.
Unfortunately, recently the tree suffered the loss of a major limb and began listing to one side.
It is now his opinion that the tree would not likely survive the construction and may pose a risk
to people and property.
I am seeking permission to remove the said Honey Locust before the commence of my
construction project.
Please find attached

Thank you for your consideration. You have my permission to visit my property to examine the
tree.

Re: Honey locust
Dear Mr. Leitch:
Thank you for the opportunity to assist you with the preservation of your honey locust(Gleditsia
triancanthos)tree. During my March 23, 2019 site visit, I conducted a preliminary assessment of
this tree and judged it to be a suitable candidate for preservation during your planned
construction project. During that visit we agreed that, during the coming months, as your project
moved from the planning phase into pre-construction, you would keep me apprised of progress
so that I could inspect the tree further, and help form a preservation plan.
On August 13, 2019, you notified me the brick walkway and deck were to be removed by hand
the following week. I was planning to come inspect the root zone of your tree, but before we got
that far, I received the unfortunate news that the tree had sustained serious damage. A major
lower limb failed and the tree developed a list, lifting boards in your deck.
We expected that the tree would sustain construction-related damage, impacting the root system
during excavation and construction. We also expected that a degree of pruning would be
necessary to accommodate the new house. Our plan was to monitor the tree closely throughout
this process and take measures to minimize these impacts and prepare the tree to withstand them.
I credit you for all the effort you made to seek professional help to preserve a tree which you
truly value; however I can no longer consider this tree a suitable candidate for preservation. The
anticipated impact of planned construction combined with the recent damage will present an
unacceptable level of risk to people and property.

Too often, arborists are asked to remove quality trees we would rather not. I was looking forward
to helping you preserve this special tree, but I'm afraid the recent change in circumstances is
cause for me to recommend that the tree be removed. I wish you success with your project and
encourage you to replant when the project is complete. If you would like help choosing a suitable
specimen, please do contact me. I'd be happy to assist you with any questions you may have.
Best Regards,
Matthew D#ly
