Gentlemen:
I am writing on behalf of my wife and myself and several of our
neighbors. We oppose the application for a variance as sought
in connection with a sign to be erected at the shopping center
in Mattituck. Because of other obligations I am not able to
appear at the hearing scheduled for November 2, 1972; and I ask
that this letter be made a part of the record.
We have admired the Town's regulation of signs for advertising
purposes and have noted that the Town has virtually eliminated
billboards. It was, therefore, distressing to learn that the
operators of the shopping center, above referred to, are seeking
a variance to erect a sign different from those permitted through-
out the Town of Southo1d. We are particularly concerned that the
operators of tae shopping center are not permitted to erect a sign
which will initiate a neonvi11e similar in effect to many of the
large shopping centers in western Suffolk and Nassau County.
We submit that a variance here may set a precedent for other
applications, and the provisions of the ordinance designed for
safety, and to protect community appearance, as well as the general
contentment and comfort of the community would be thwarted. We,
therefore, ask that the uniformity which the present ordinance
