Judith T. Terry Southold Town Clerk May 31, 1995 y1a moo, /99 News Release. Ref J.A Stack 298-4754 Benjamin Prandin will become a name on the Southold T own Register of Designated Landmarks on Tuesday evening yfay 30th, at the Town Board Meeting, at 7;30. Franklin was responsible for the installation of thel11file Markers in Southold Town Although these granite stones have been here since 1755, it was not possible to award landmark status until this year. The Landmark Preservation Law was amended in 1994 to include strucnires and his rr toric districts. This permitted the consideration of the mile markers. The award will be made posthumously to Postmaster Franklin. A second landmark will be registered to Frank(Sparky) Coyle of Greenport. Sparky's house was originally part of Col: John Youngs' home. The building was sawn in two in the 1800's and both parts were moved. Col. Youngs was the son of Pastor John Youngs, the first pastor in Southold. Landmark Preservation Awards will be presented to Beth and Frank lanno for their restoration of The Ellsworth Tathill House at Wolf Pit Lake in Mattituck, and Dr. Norman and Phoebe Cohen for their restoration of the Cicero Breeze King House, in Orient. These awards are made to acknowledge the time and effort required to restore and maintain an historic house. The Town appreciates the part these homeowners play in making the North Fork a place people love to visit and live. Recognition of the contribution to preservation made by the late Robert Long will be acknowledged at this meeting. Bob helped to preserve our "Milestones" by writing a lively and in formtive booklet about Benjamin Franklin's visits to the North Fork and his part in installing the milestones. Bob also helped organize groups of caretakers for these irreplacible treasures. Southold has more of these markers than any other town in the United States. Ln The Youngs/Coyle House 220 Champlin Place, Greenport Town of Southold As one drives by the Youngs/Coyle House today, it is clear from its saltbox shape and spare detailing that this, could be a very old house. Yet there are no other houses like it on Champlin Place. Upon closer examination of the interior, one can confirm, by the post-and-beam framing throughout and by the handhewn, pegged beams visible in the attic, that indeed, that this house is very old and very important. A review of historical material, paintings and photographs in the possession of the owner, Frank Coyle and other historians, suggest that this house was moved to Champlin Place from a nearby site at the head of Stirling Creek, where it was once part of the large, prosperous, 17th Century homestead of John Youngs, son of the Rev. John Youngs, a founder of the Town of Southold. • The westernmost portion of the Frank McIntosh residence, located just north of Manhanset Road on Route 25 and adjacent to Brecknock Hall, shows many simi- larities in shape, size and detailing to the Youngs/Coyle House. This indicates, as historical materials show, that both-houses may have been joined together forming the heart of the Youngs Family Homestead. A map of Southold, Shelter Island and the "Village of Greenport," dated 1872, shows a symbol for a house and the label "J.B.Youngs" at the head of Stirling Creek, corroborating this theory. Furthermore no houses or names are shown in the present locations of the McIntosh and Coyle houses, indicating that they must'have been moved to their present locations. Further investigative work would be important in substantiating the present theory for the sequence of events. Investigation could focus on an archeological dig at the Stirling Creek site and an examination of the wood frame for hash marks, di- mensioning, bay spacing, wall sections and rafter slopes to further confirm the proposition that the Youngs/Coyle and McIntosh houses were once joined and situ- ated at the head of Stirling Creek. This would further document their intriguing histo- ries.
